Austen spends her days working in the corporate world and her nights bringing her stories to life. She's an avid reader and claims to have too many favorite authors to narrow it down to one. 3.5 stars. I enjoyed this read and like the characters well enough. I did feel it rushed at the end a bit and there was a lot left to be explored and depth on some level was missing. Despite all that it was enjoyable.

Prologue

Parker Meeks looked through the window of the cab and pulled the duffle bag a little closer as the conversation she’d had with her senior agent less than twenty-four hours ago, replayed in her head.

"Your new assignment is Congressman Maxwell Irving’s teenage daughter," Senior Agent Richard Moss of the Secret Service said as he handed her the thin file.

Agent Parker Meeks opened the file and cocked her head to the side.

"The secret service doesn’t usually detail a presidential candidate’s children," she replied.

"We do when he’s a major candidate, and there are special circumstances," he added sternly.

Agent Meeks nodded her head. She knew the protocol.

"Congressman Irving is Jewish and there has never been a Jewish president in U.S. history, and someone wants to keep it that way. His daughter, Tiffany Irving, is seventeen and in her senior year of high school. She was recently placed in a boarding school under an alias, to complete her senior year out of the spotlight."

Agent Meeks nodded again.

"She’s attending St. Williams Academy, an all girl’s Christian school under the alias, Alice Warren. The headmaster is the only person in the school who is aware of her identity or the nature of this situation, he sighed. Twenty-four hours ago, someone sent Congressman Irving a new threat, this time it’s on his daughter’s life. Whoever is doing this either knows where she is, or at least that she’s attending a religious school."

"Are they targeting her because she’s Jewish?" Agent Meeks asked.

"Yes, it appears that way."

"Can we move her to another school?"

"No. Congressman Irving and the director of our department met this morning. They decided to keep her where she is and put an agent inside undercover, until she finishes her school year."

"Undercover?" Agent Meeks raised an eyebrow.

"Yes. The headmaster’s name is Kyle Batey. He will have everything waiting for you. That duffle bag over there contains the clothing you will need to be wearing when you arrive. It is imperative that no one in the school know who you are or what you’re doing and most importantly, no one can know Alice Warren’s true identity. You will be on your own with no backup, and you’ll have to go dark for the next eight months."

Agent Meeks was familiar with undercover work and had done it many times during her career in the Army and as swat team police officer, before joining the Secret Service.

"Your flight leaves in two hours. Everything you need to know about the detail and your undercover profile is in the file. I suggest you learn it verbatim."

"Who am I? she asked, flipping the page. A priest! No way in hell!" she snapped, seeing the words Reverend Canon written on the bottom.

"Agent Meeks, if anyone can pull this off, it’s you. Now, get your ass on that plane. End of discussion."

"With all due respect, sir, this is crazy. How the hell am I supposed to pretend to be a priest?"

"You’re Catholic aren’t you? At least that’s what it says in your dossier. Did you lie on your application?" he furled his brow and crossed his arms.

She blew out a frustrating breath. Yes, I’m Catholic, but I haven’t practiced my religion in a handful of years. I don’t particularly believe in organized religion…not anymore, she trailed off.

"I don’t give two shits what you believe and don’t believe. The boarding school is Episcopalian, but from what I understand, they are low church. Whatever the fuck that means, I don’t know, but the headmaster said you will fit in fine."

"Wonderful," she sneered.

Parker looked up to answer the driver’s question and quickly turned back towards the window, when she saw her reflection in the mirror. She was wearing a black, itchy, polyester pantsuit and simple black lace-up oxford shoes; not much different than her daily work attire as a secret service agent. It was what was under the suit that startled her. She had on a black vest with red buttons and piping over a long sleeved black clerical shirt with a full white collar, hugging her neck tightly like God’s personal noose. She looked every bit the part of a Reverend Canon, but she felt like she was wearing a Halloween costume.

Once they’d vacated the bustling city, rolling hills and rows of forest trees lined the street. The taxi turned down a single road that wound around a narrow path and came to an end at a set of iron gates. The St. Williams Academy at the end of a circular drive behind the gates, wasn’t overly large, but big enough to house the school buildings and dorm halls for a hundred students, as well as the chapel. The building was tan with a green roof. The top of the chapel in the back, stuck up above the single storied school building.

The taxi rolled through the gates and came to stop in front of the main entrance. The driver turned around.

Here we are, Reverend Mother, he said.

Parker raised an eyebrow.

Is it Pastor? he asked glancing at her attire, noticing the bright red piping on her vest. I’m sorry, are you a bishop?

Parker felt the clerical collar squeeze her neck a little tighter when she thought about punching the prick through the window between the seats.

Reverend Canon, she answered as she handed two twenties through the window and grabbed the duffle bag.

She slid out of the car and checked the semi-automatic pistol tucked against her back in a force of habit. Feeling the cold steel, she straightened her posture and watched the yellow car drive away, trapping her in eternal hell for the next however many months.

You must be Canon Meeks, a deep, male voice chimed from nearby.

Parker spun on her heels to see a man standing a few feet away. He was a little shy of six foot with a medium build, a shiny, bald head and a thin, white mustache and goatee.

Kyle Batey, he said, walking forward with his hand out. I’m the headmaster. Welcome to St. Williams Academy. He was wearing a dark blue suit with a white shirt and matching blue and red paisley tie.

Parker Meeks, she replied, shaking firmly.

Would you mind taking a little walk with me before we go inside? he asked.

Sure. Parker gripped the duffle bag tightly and stepped up next to him as he walked away from the front of the building towards the iron gates.

Agent Meeks, I’m the only person on this campus that knows anything about you. I’m afraid many of our staff members are going to be very curious.

I’m prepared for that, she replied.

Good. I chose to have you come in as a canon from the diocese. Do you know much about the Angelican faith?

About as much as I could cram into my head on the flight. I grew up Catholic, even attended a school like this for a few years.

"A Catholic canon isn’t much different from an Episcopalian one. It’s an honorary appointment for a deacon or a priest
