Our open plan office felt like a morgue. Within its sterile white walls the unenthused staff moved around like the living dead. I was glad I only had to be in there on Fridays. My vision spiraled around while everyone worked in their own realities, in their workspaces, as if we were all slaves to the machine, their eyeballs hypnotized by the screen. Worker rats inputting numbers into a spreadsheet, taking phone calls. Repeat and repeat, someone please shoot me…

I sound like a cynical bastard don’t I? Perhaps I am. A stagnating career as an account manager does that to you. I held up my cup to sip my bitter hot coffee, and observed Sarah, the only cute girl in our office, walk past. I bit on the nib of my pen to watch those hips moving from side to side. She turned and smiled at me so I waved back to be polite. Nice to look at but not very pleasant to talk to. Definitely just a pretty face.

John, you are so in! Francis said, holding his hand up to high five me. I turned to him and rolled my eyes. The youth these days and their misinterpretations. Francis was one of the sales reps that worked with me, twenty-three years old, short bloke with brown hair who modeled himself on Tom Cruise. The only resemblance was the height. Quite a storyteller with a notorious ability to talk shit to get a sale.

He slept with one of his customers to secure a contract, wining and dining her before putting her to bed. The things people do to get their bonus huh? I enjoyed his company none the less, he made me feel good about myself because of the things he did. I was in envy of his youth and his energy.

Francis, some words of wisdom… Don’t screw the crew. I said. He was bewildered from my comment, scratching his head.

    Huh?

You never heard of the saying?

    No?

Even before you started here, when you were mopping the floor at McDonalds?

"Fuck you, I mopped no floors at McDonald’s. I was the crew trainer – The boss… you hear that, BOSS…" I started laughing. I knew that being a crew trainer was nowhere near being the boss. In my opinion those roles were given to those who were useless at flipping the burgers and frying chips, but were better at training people. If he were good at both, he would have been the boss.

Shit! Get back on the phone… I said to Francis as Sherry walked in. We both picked up our phones and pretended to talk to our imaginary customers. Sherry scared the crap out of us both, being our sales manager. She was a blonde in her early forties, quite attractive, but the way she carried herself, and blew up at us at meetings, man you would think she had a pair of balls. She slowly walked past me and I caught her glance.

Sell, she said tersely. She tapped me on the shoulder and I peered at Francis. He was nervous and he swallowed. The rumor was that Sherry had a thing for younger men. She moved over to Francis and snatched the phone off him.

Young man. It helps to have a customer on the other line if you want to sell something. Stop mucking around.

Yes, Sherry. I’m sorry Sherry… Francis said like a groveling beggar.

I watched as Sherry licked her lips, giving Francis a seductive look before she walked to the boardroom. We both slipped back into chairs to take a breather.

Phew… Francis, forget what I said, take one for the team. I said, worrying if our days being employed were numbered.

Hell no. Francis shivered, when things settled a bit, I peered at my watch and released it was lunchtime.

    Break? I said to Francis.

He nodded, wanting to get out of the office.

What do you feel like? he said rubbing his stomach.

McDonald’s? You must still have your discounts, being a boss. I said, smirking. Francis shook his head and punched my arm.

We pulled up to the entrance to find all the car park the spaces full. It appeared there was a queue inside with people lining up outside the door. I wanted to go through the drive-thru, but Francis insisted we dine in. We ordered a couple of Big Mac combos and Francis ordered one of those kid’s meals that come with a toy.

Aren’t you too old to buying that? I said, frowning.

Francis shrugged his shoulders. I always buy them. I like collecting the toys.

And it's no wonder, why you don’t have a girlfriend. I said. He ignored my comment and moved the toy truck around the table.

Our food arrived. Francis had a habit of talking with
