Miracle at Christmas - Sydney Canyon
Prologue
The streets of Denver were freshly plowed and Civic Center Park, the centerpiece of downtown, was covered in a pristine blanket of white snow. The large art museums, local municipalities, and government buildings surrounding the park, were lit up with bright colorful lights. Beautiful holiday decorations were scattered around the fountains, statues, and war memorial inside the park. This area of the city stayed lit up from December 21st through the first of January in a twelve days of lights celebration.
Most of the city chose to take off the days leading up to Christmas, so there were less cars on the road and less people working in the buildings and businesses around the city. However, two middle-aged women who worked for a non-profit organization, walked around downtown anyway, collecting donations to buy toys for sick children and food for the homeless. Many of the business people they encountered had given them checks, and the more they collected, the more they could do for the needy, so they continued on through the light dusting of snow and freezing cold temperatures.

Down the street from the park, the doors to the county jail opened and a woman with short blonde hair, cut in a messy and slightly wispy spiked style, stepped outside. A tall, lanky guy followed closely behind. The woman was wearing a dark pea coat over her charcoal gray designer pantsuit. Tightening the white scarf around her neck, she raised an eyebrow over her grayish blue eyes, and flashed a pretty smile.
Damien, don’t ever stupidly threaten a cop and his family again. You got lucky. If you hadn’t been beaten too, this could be a lot worse. You’d probably be sitting in a cold cell right now, instead of heading somewhere warm,
she said. And for the love of God, do not go near your ex-wife’s house, or anywhere else for that matter. If you get one more charge against you, I may not be able to get you out from behind those bars again.
I know. I’m not going near that crazy bitch, and I never said I was going to kill that stupid-ass cop.
The woman next to him stopped walking. Your father pays me a lot of money to keep you out of jail,
she replied, shaking her head. You got lucky this time on a technicality, but next time it may not be in your favor,
she finished, walking towards the podium with news journalists gathered around.
I’m not the drug dealer they think I am. I got caught dealing one time and because my pops is famous, the cops around here assume I got connections and I’m trouble. This is bullshit, man. I didn’t even beat my ex-wife the first time around. Her new boyfriend did it, and she blamed it on me.
The woman sighed, I know. We’ve been down this road. Just keep your nose clean and don’t say a word during this press conference.
Thanks, Ms. Bosch,
he said, watching her walk up to the podium.

December 24th
Trisha Miller lowered her eyes to the paperwork in front of her and quickly unplugged the personal space heater near her feet under the desk, when the office door opened. She’d been building up the courage to ask for the rest of the afternoon off to spend with her ailing mother, but the look on her boss’s face made her think twice. She rubbed her hands together, trying to stay warm. The small office building was an old historic structure with very little insulation, making it cold in the winter and hot in the summer; and Dylan keep the thermostat locked. Trisha’s desk was right outside of Dylan’s office, and the opposite side of the building consisted of a large room shared by two junior attorneys, and the handful of intern law students that did the grunt work for the firm, with a conference room behind that down the hall.
Total waste of money,
Dylan Bosch grumbled, removing her scarf and overcoat. Remind me to look into the city budget to see how they’re allocating the money for this ridiculous twelve days of lights nonsense. It looks like a damn rainbow beacon. Can’t gay people just be gay? Why do we need all of these rainbows and peace rallies and other stupid things that are a waste of time and look hideous? Besides, there is absolutely no reason to have Christmas lights on in the middle of the day anyway. That’s the problem with this city, they blow the taxpayer’s money on monotonous Christmas bullshit. It’s just another day,
she spat, shaking the snow out of her short blonde hair.
Yes, ma’am,
Trisha replied. She wanted to say she didn’t think the lights had anything to
