About this ebook

The popularity of football is at an all-time high. Thousands of kids fall in love with the game on a daily basis. This book is a must read! It is an easy-to-use, inexpensive tool that anyone can use to teach kids the basic skills required to play football. This book is an invaluable resource when it comes to the basics of the game because it will equip parents and “rookies” with the knowledge necessary to prepare their kid to hit the ground running and earn playing time. I am a former All-State high school football player, and now that I am a father of three sons the purpose of a book like this has become clear. My playing experience blessed me with a level of knowledge that I passed along to my kids and it enabled them to play at a higher level compared to some of their peers who were also first time football players. I firmly believe that my kid’s success on the field is because of the drills and practice we did before they began to play organized football. I hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I enjoyed writing it.

    Introduction

One key component of my kid's success on the football field was that they really knew what they were doing from the very first practice. From the start I noticed a big difference in my kids play versus the other kids that were also playing football for the first time. My kids pretty much knew what to do whenever the coach involved them in a drill and they did a really good job most of the time. This was important because they were able to slide right in and earn significant playing time. That playing time helped their overall development as football players.

As the season progressed they began to have more and more success at practice and fortunately it also translated to success in the games. This success encouraged them to practice more at home and they really began to express a genuine interest to learn as many skills as they could. Some days I would come home and they would be waiting for me with their cleats and the football in hand ready to work on drills. I cannot begin to tell you how good I felt to see them so eager to learn. My kid's enthusiasm for learning to play football, coupled with the fact that tons of other kids could benefit from learning basic football skills prior to joining a team, prompted me to write this book.

As parents we want to put our kids in the best position to succeed, the information that will be covered in this book can serve as a resource for parents to utilize to teach their kids the basics skills needed to play the game of football. The purpose of this book is to discuss the fundamental objective of the game of football and to provide drills and tips to teach young players how to play the game. The book contains a number of examples of drills in an easy to read format for parents to utilize to prepare their sons to play youth football. This book should not be viewed as a silver bullet or quick-fix that will guarantee that junior will be a future NFL superstar. It is designed to help you understand the typical skill sets football coaches look for when they choose players. The target audience for this book is the parent or guardians of both new kids just starting to play football and kids with less than two years of organized football experience. Now let's take a look at the objectives of the game of football.

The basic objective of football is for the offense (which is the team with the ball) to advance the ball down the field in an effort to score points. The game is played with 22 players on the field at one time. On one side of the ball will be 11 players on offense and on the other side of the ball will be 11 players on defense. (See Position Diagram) The ball is advanced through a series of plays executed by the offense. The offense gets four downs to run plays in an attempt to score points or earn a 1st down. A 1st down equals ten yards in distance and each time the offense successfully earns a first down they get a new set of four downs to either earn another first down or score points. Ideally the offense will successfully get enough 1st downs to move the ball until they cross the end zone of the opposing team, which is called a touchdown. A touchdown is worth six points.

Defensively the objective is to prevent the offense from moving the ball or scoring points. If the offense does not get a 1st down or score points within four plays, they will have to turn the ball over to the opposing team. For example, let's say on 1st down the offense gains three yards on a running play, and then on 2nd down they gain another two yards for a total of five yards. They are
