The Forgotten Wizard - C.J Thompson

Chapter 1: Almost a Normal Day

The painting of my father looked nothing like him. His black hair, glowing skin and youthful appearance were all gone now. How could someone so healthy go downhill so quickly? Putting the painting face down on my desk, I looked out the window to try and take my mind off him.

In the distance, I could see the yellow dragons headed up the snow capped mountains to prepare for the long winter. Small dots from here, I wondered what a life they must live. I slouched in my chair as it felt like class was never going to end.

It all seemed so pointless. Why did we have to learn about wizards when none were still alive? There was passion in Mr. Hopkin's blue eyes as he lectured to our small uninterested class. His wavy grey hair, thick glasses and wispy voice always made him seem wise. With his finger in the air, it looked like his boring speech was just getting started. Wizards are an important part of our history. Without them we would not be here today. Despite their wrong doings, they actually did us some good after all. Of course, that is another story in itself.

I put my head down as he went on and on about the wizards. If the wizards were so great, then how come they were all dead? With my nose flat against my desk, I tried to block out his voice. Truthfully, I didn't belong in his class. Tristan and I were two of his oldest students. In fact, we only had a few weeks before we were done with school all together. We both could barely wait for that moment to arrive. Tilting my head to the left, I could see Tristan with his head down too. He looked just as bored as me. I slowly peaked up as I realized everyone else had their heads down as well. It was official, I wasn't the only one who was bored. Feeling a little sorry for Mr. Hopkins, I sat up just to let him know at least one of us was listening. His eyes darted over to me with excitement. Ah, Roland Roper! I’m glad you decided to join me. It’s nice to see somebody paying attention today. I know this may seem boring, but I’ve been focusing on wizards lately for good reason. Since you are awake, do you want to know a little secret?

Trying to look interested, I nodded my head while displaying a look of curiosity. A secret?

He licked his lips as I knew he was eager to tell me something. With his finger in the air, he sheepishly glanced around to make sure everyone was still sleeping. His eyes grew twice their normal size as he leaned down into my ear. There is a wizard near here. I am sure of it. A real wizard! How about that for a history lesson today my boy?

With my eyebrows scrunched, I scratched my head. But, I thought the wizards all died in the Greystone War? My father said nobody’s seen a wizard in decades.

Laughing, Mr. Hopkins shook his head. It may seem that way, he whispered. Your father is correct for the most part. But there are indications that there’s at least one wizard alive.

Indications? What do you mean? I asked.

Yes. Mr. Hopkins said with a low voice. Trees burnt from the root up, stripped of leaves with a large round crater around the trunks. Wizards often use trees to test new spells for various reasons.

Putting one finger over his lips, he looked straight into my eyes. My boy, there’s a wizard still out there. I am sure of it. I’ve seen him!

Shaking my head, I refused to believe what he was telling me. But there was a tiny part of me that wanted to believe him. That's because my father was very sick. So sick that nobody could seem to heal him. But, if a wizard did exist, could he heal my father? That was a question I once only pondered in my dreams. If Mr. Hopkins was right, this could change everything. As he walked away, I noticed Tristan's curious eyes peeking over in my direction. With a loud clap, everyone popped up as they were awoken from napping. That’s all for today, sleepyheads, Mr. Hopkins said. "Just remember,
