Author

Russell Brooks

Prior to becoming a writer, Russell Brooks considers himself fortunate that he had the opportunity to be an Indiana Hoosier Track Champion and Canadian Track Team member in both the 100 and 200 meters. It was during Brooks's travels across Canada, the United States, and Europe, that he came up with his story ideas and came up with outlines for his future thrillers which he would later writer. His BS in Biology from Indiana University helped him to write his first spy thriller, Pandora's Succession, followed by the short story collection Unsavory Delicacies. The latest addition to the spy series is The Demeter Code. So far, it appears that this series is far from over. The standalone thriller, Chill Run, was released afterwards. What makes Brooks's spy series unique is rather than focus on plots which strictly revolve around political matters—both domestic and international—Brooks is more creative by combining stories that are literally ripped from the headlines and weaving them with hardcore science and producing the most non-predictable plots imaginable. As a result, Brooks's works have been compared to those of a young Michael Crichton, Robert Ludlum, and even Dean Koontz. Although his goal is to keep readers in suspense by writing edge-of-your seat and page-turning thrillers, he may occasionally dash off a short story, entertain viewers with dramatic readings, or play his violin. Russell Brooks currently lives in Montreal, Quebec.

How far would you go to get revenge on the person who ruined your reputation? In these three short stories by Russell Brooks, a rogue operative, a food critic, and a mob boss each encounter embarrassing and tragic consequences for their actions. I truly enjoyed these stories; they were fast-paced and gripping. I give Unsavory Delicacies an A!

Unsavory Delicacies is a trilogy of short stories (starter, main & dessert), namely - Crème Brûlée, To the Last Bite & Shashlyk and Morezhenoe. The three stories are very short, very fast paced & quite thrilling! The stories are all interconnected by a restaurant (not the same restaurant, mind) & an underlying theme - revenge. Crème Brûlée begins in a restaurant in Old Montreal (love stories that take place in my native Canada!) & features spies & some serious intrigue. To the Last Bite is about a food critic, Dennis Kirby, who takes great pleasure in ripping restaurants apart in his column. This one is not for the faint of heart, or those with a delicate stomach! Shashlyk and Morezhenoe takes place in Russia & features a character from Crème Brûlée, Ridley Fox & again features spies - this time with a Russian Mafia twist. All 3 stories are excellently written - my only regret is that they are so short. I think that all 3 could have been a lot longer & still would have been as good. These left you wanting more - a lot more.........but maybe that was Brooks' idea all along!

Unsavory Delicacies by Russell Brooks is a terse collection of three killer culinary short stories. There's sex, exquisite dining, and a dead body or two!Creme Brulee is the first story in the book, offering up international spies and conspiracies with a side of revenge! In To the Last Bite, we meet Dennis Kirby, a renown food critic whose reviews means life or death in the restaurant business. His last critique subject was better than any other he'd had before, until he finds out the secret ingredient!Lastly we have Shashlyk and Morozhenoe. In this tale, Mr. Brooks uses a character from one of his previous stories. In this, we read of spies and covert operations dealing with the Russian Mafia. What they came to find and what is actually hidden away, are two very different things!Unsavory Delicacies was a very quick and amusing read. I do feel the author could have spent more time with each story, adding to the plot and length of the tale. I realize this is a collection of short stories, but they did seem even too short for that. Honestly, this book really wasn't "my thing" but I'm sure there are plenty of readers who would truly enjoy this! There are violent and adult situations not suited for younger readers.~Hazel O'SheaWritten for the Juniper Grove Blog

This book is a series of short stories full of suspense centered in either eating establishments or using food as a cover. An anthology of interesting and yet refined reading, Russell Brooks brings you a short novella that packs just enough punch to keep you looking for more. His protagonist shows up in several of the stories, but it is the suspense that ties them together. The individual stories are bundled together under the title of Unsavory Delicacies. In Crème Brule, Brooks has used a dining experience to introduce his characters. Monique Beauvais is a beautiful young woman willing to use her looks to get what she wants. Working for the Arms of Ares she is more than willing to set up her date, collect the money and mark him for termination. As she completes the deal, she leaves him at the restaurant and as she walks away hears the rifle shot killing her patsy. However, everything is not as it seems. Her contact, Curtis, is not who she believed him to be, and everything she believes has just taken a turn. Her life now in danger and her cover blown, can she finalize the contract for her employers? Things are not what they seem and Monique is taken aback at her naivety, believing and trusting in her ability to pull a swindle, she is trapped. Having always used her beauty to get what she needed she is at a loss when it is no long enough. Curtis too has his secrets, he is undercover and on to her tricks but will do what it takes to make sure she does not get her way. This is an interesting quick read with a twist to the ending. In To the Last Bite, Russell Brooks brings us a bit of a creepy suspense, about a food critic. Dennis Kirby makes a living by giving terrible reviews to the restaurants he visits. Occasionally he will give a good review but the bad ones are the fodder that keeps his readers coming back. When he finds a French restaurant with food that he find quite palatable he is impressed. The owner is sweating bullets hoping to receive a rave review, and Dennis assures him he will receive it.Even after leaving the restaurant, the food stays with him, but something is familiar to him about the owner. He cannot quite put his finger on it but it is there. Maybe he had seen him somewhere before but he is not sure. Calling his girlfriend, he again cannot reach her and begins to worry. He has been trying to reach her now for some time; she is always available so he is concerned. After his eating experience at the French restaurant, he also finds that other food is not quite as good, but he is understandably surprised with the chef show up at his home with another meal. Something is not quite right, but the horror that unfolds will be so unexpected you will not see it coming. This is a quick and quirky story with a somewhat creepy undertone. Brooks’ characters are bizarre and the chef is just a bit frightening. There could be a moral and yet it to too odd to list it as so. It is a strange and unexpected tale. To wrap it all up, Brooks brings us another short but succinct story, Shashlyk and Morozhenoe, revolving around his hero Ridley Fox. Fox goes undercover with a few other CIA operatives, posing as inspectors looking for bad meat. Looking to find and expose some important documents from the Arms of Ares, Ridley realizes the safe is not set up as expected. He calls in his man Dobbs. Unaware of the circumstances, his team is caught in a tight spot when the Russian Mafia show up and inform them that they have been watched on camera. Can they hold on until Dobbs show’s up. Ridley is not to be trifled with, yet can he get out of one more spot of danger? This is a fun and fanciful set of stories with are suspenseful and interesting. They hit just the right tone to keep you reading. Each is just different enough to build the pace, and just intriguing enough for enjoyable reading. This is a quick and intense novella, put together with verve. The characters in each case are disingenuous and really keep you interested. This book was received as a free download from the author. Crème Brûlée

Old Montreal, Quebec

So what do you have for me? Monique Beauvais said to Curtis White, speaking with a French-Canadian accent. He sat opposite her at the round table for two by the window in one of the most talked about gourmet restaurants in Old Montreal. She chose this spot for its romantic décor, impressive wine cellar, and its distinction of being in a building that dated back to the nineteenth century. Outside on Rue Saint Paul, a car or two crept by on its narrow cobblestone surface, followed by a horse-drawn cart—one of several that were popular among tourists—surrounded by buildings dating back as early as the 1600s. For that reason, Hollywood movie studios chose to film in this area when they wanted to mimic cities such as Paris, London, or Moscow.

The nerd—who was American—finished off the last of his Crème Brûlée and stared at her like a drooling dog as though
