About this ebook

A story book for God’s children. The Bible, especially the Old Testament, is packed full of true accounts from which many different applications of God’s Word and illustrations of His love in our lives can be found. So are our own lives. Often when I read the Bible a particular incident or moment will come back to me and I’ll immediately have a greater understanding of what I’m reading. Even better is when I’m experiencing something and I’m reminded of the Word that addresses my life at that moment. If we look, we can see evidence of God’s presence and truth of His word through even the quickest and oddest events in our everyday lives. It makes Him so much more real to us and encourages us to keep believing, to keep trusting in Him. This collection is twelve such episodes from my own life or that of friends. Several are filled with humor, you might even laugh out loud. Others, well, not so much, as they were tense or difficult times. Add to those twelve one monologue and one parable, and you’ve got 14 great reads, each that can inspire and encourage you in just a few minutes time while you’re waiting in line or taking a commercial break. Our Father is a Father of stories that inspire and illustrate. Jesus often taught using stories to encourage and explain. Hoping they can use some of mine to bless you in some way - to encourage, to inspire, or just to give you a much needed break.

I am a native Floridian, and have spent most of my life here in Central Florida. I worked in some of level of government from high school until recently when I left to write and minister full time. But I have had a real love for reading, for study, for writing and teaching since I was a very young girl and have devoted as much time as possible to learning and practicing those arts. I love humor and fantasy. The more I laugh, the better, and that's a good thing since I give myself so much material. But I can be serious when I need to be or when I think the topic at hand demands it. So I was thinking I should have a pen name. That way I could write humor and lighthearted encouragement or fiction under one name, and the more serious, studious works under another. I changed my mind, though, and decided its likely much easier to learn to write a good book description than it would be to keep up with two of me. The main thing is that I hope to make a difference in the lives of my readers, whether that difference is a life-changing revelation through a thought provoking teaching, or whether it is no more than a few minutes of escape to a more pleasant place. I really love Jesus, and I hope to show others how awesome a relationship with Him can be.

    Choose Your Words Wisely

State Department spokesman Robert McCloskey once said, I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I’m not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant. No doubt we all, at least a few times in our lives, have related to his words.

There is no getting around the fact that some people hear only what they want to hear. Whole lives are often founded upon half truths. And, inevitably, somebody is going to misunderstand, misinterpret, take to extremes, or purposely twist what we say.

    Mom, are you cross-dresser?

I responded only with a whatever face and slight shake of my head. I had obviously walked into yet another one of my son’s uncanny applications of things people say.

Well, he couldn’t resist, you did say you pray that God will strengthen you with His might in your inner man.

Being misconstrued and having what we say twisted or used out of context can be extremely frustrating, but it is nothing new. The Pharisees of Jesus’ day were constantly trying to trip Him up with vain arguments and interpretations of what He had spoken. Even Satan, in his temptation of Christ in the wilderness, used God’s word out of context. It’s a fact of human life we must learn to endure, especially if we are in any word-related ministry or field.

It happened to me again not too long ago. I tried to end a blunt, heard-hitting sermon on an up note by reminding the congregation that our Father is a God of grace. As I stepped down from the dais I noticed part of our youth group involved in a playful debate. Waving arms, shocked expressions, laughter, and light-hearted arguments filled the center aisle of the church. Whatever had them going, had them going strong.

She did not say that! I heard one girl defending me.

That’s just wrong, one of the guys interjected. You know that’s not what she meant.

Well, she said it. responded the young male instigator. You heard her, she said--

I said what? I intruded on their play time.

You, a friendly finger pointed in my direction, I can’t believe you called us that!

Called you what? I didn’t call anybody anything.

Yes, you did. You called us ‘butt dust.’

    Oh, I did not.

Yes, you did. You said, ‘God knows we’re butt dust.’ His explanation reversed the emphasis on the last two words, completely changing the meaning.

I understood. Trying to maintain a little composure in the midst of several teens and young adults all huddled in a laughing mass, I clarified. I said, ‘God knows we’re but dust.’ Switching the emphasis back to my own should have cleared it up - but no.

See! You admit it! You said we’re butt dust.

But, b-u-t, but dust. Little but, big dust.

B-u-t-t, butt dust. A little butt dust.

A harmless change of emphasis in the expression provided this group of kids and myself with a little laughter, and hopefully made the point stick deep in their minds. But the sad truth is, what we say or what we mean is not always what is heard and that can be serious.

We will never completely remedy this situation, and regardless as to how plainly we speak, what we say will not always be what is heard. But as Ralph Waldo Emerson pointed out, Speech is power: Speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel. We must therefore be careful to choose our words wisely, and strive to make our points clear.

As a matter of fact, the Bible doesn’t even include the word but in the Scripture I paraphrased: For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust. Psalm 103:14

Adding one tiny word opened a door to a whole new perception.

"What is butt dust, anyway? Asked another young lady.

Excess baby powder I suppose, I answered and walked away leaving them to their own interpretation.

He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from troubles.
