    After a few short years at Ranchwood Estates, life as a volunteer building superintendent had grown tedious to Edwin. He often filled those monotonous moments in stranger’s bathrooms, kitchens and the like, wondering about his future. Sometimes he dreamt of what it might be like for him to be married, or to live in a larger house. But now, there was something tangible to dream of; something right in Edwin’s grasp.

    That money meant the world to Edwin, and now it was the new topic to occupy his thoughts. For an instant Edwin felt ridiculous for treating such a small amount of cash so crucially, but he admitted what would seem small to others was like a goldmine to him. Five hundred dollars was far more than anything Edwin had seen in recent times. What to do with each cent was well worth the worry, and like all things with Edwin, there was a process involved in figuring it out.

    First, Edwin had to make an intentional decision not to help somebody else. There were countless Ranchwood residents who needed repairs – some repairs that would never realistically happen if Edwin or someone like him didn’t step in and intervene. But Edwin would have to put those and other such charitable inclinations on the backburner.

    Then, there were Uncle Pauly and Estella’s wedding costs. After having being so bent against the idea of the two of them marrying he wanted a chance to redeem himself from his own guilt. He wanted to thank his uncle for all those years of wise talks and hearty meals; times that probably weren’t done but were certainly destined to decline, with the two of them moving in separate directions in their lives.
