About this ebook

‘This book is written from a dog’s point of view and if you are an animal lover, it is a MUST read. Absolutely brilliant, hilarious mostly, tears pricked my eyes, but I finished with a smile on my face.’

Joanna McDaid. ‘This is not just a story about a dog. It is also about acceptance. The passing of our pets is something we all ‘expect’ – but struggle to ‘accept.’ It is not about the sadness in the passing – it’s about the happiness in the living. The rollercoaster journey of a dog called Glen, that will be remembered by thousands as Bob Tails.’

Glen was a 13 year old farm/working collie.

I adopted him knowing he required palliative care.

    This is his story.

    Start Sentence

I spent my whole life on a farm in Scotland, just as my parents and grandparents did before me. I spent my days roaming free, herding sheep and doing whatever was asked of me. My nights were spent with the other dogs in a barn, feeding times were a free for all, survival of the fittest, nature’s way. It was a good life, all I knew and I was happy.

But the day came when I was no longer able to work. The younger dogs, fitter and stronger than me were now spending their days working with the farmer as I once did. Their bellies were full. They pushed me aside at feed time. I was exhausted, hungry, deaf, partially sighted and unsure of what was ahead of me now.

One day in January 2014, I took myself off for a wee wander. I am not sure if I meant to leave the farm, or if I just went wandering and got myself lost.

I can’t remember exactly what happened, but I was found wandering and taken to Bandeath Stray Dog Shelter. They took me in, fed me, bathed me, cut the mats out of my coat and gave me a warm, dry bed to sleep in. I was so tired.

I was taken to the vet by the Scottish SPCA.

They did scans, blood tests etc and identified my various medical issues. In addition to the medical problems of old age that I have told you about they found a ‘mass’ on my liver and spleen. I also have a very sore lower back, my back right leg drags behind me when I walk. My teeth are decayed; I am unneutered and have an enlarged prostate gland. No-one knows how long I have had the liver and spleen ‘mass’, and no-one knows how long I have left. It is not treatable.

The farmer wanted me back, but I would have had to continue to live outdoors, so it was decided I will not return to the farm.

I am going to be adopted.

My picture was put onto Facebook, so many people saw it. I knew my new family was out there, I would wait till they found me.

After my vet appointment the Scottish SPCA taxi came to take me back to Bandeath. The Scottish SPCA officer that collected me was Joanna McDaid. She seemed nice, little did I know how important to me she was to become. Once Joanna had dropped me back to my kennel at Bandeath, she picked up her mobile phone and sent a text....

‘I have just met a lovely old chap at Bandeath. Remember that old collie featured on Facebook? He is available for re-homing. He is lovely and Carol, he is so the dog for you.’

    That text changed my life.

Phone calls and arrangements were made.

I was getting a new home.

My new mum was coming to collect me Saturday morning. I don’t really know what all this means to be honest, but everyone else seems to be excited.....so I guess I better be excited too!!!!

    1st February 2014

Hey peoples. Today is the day!!! The day I go to my new home.

I have a new name now too. When I was found, no one knew my name so I was given the name Bob.

It’s a new name, for a new life. Suits me I think.

To be honest it doesn’t matter what I am called; I am deaf as a bloody post!!!

I was delighted, that the Scottish SPCA lady that I liked is here with another woman. The other woman is called Mum. The Scottish SPCA woman is called Auntie JoJo. All my belongings are packed in the car, I am in the back with Auntie JoJo and off we go to the place called home!!!!

I have no idea what is going on, but I am a laid back old chap and I just go with the flow. We were in the car for about an hour, eventually we arrived home.

All I could think was ‘what the fck have I done......what the fck have I done’?

    Start Sentence

What a funny old barn this place is!!!! It is unlike any barn I have ever seen before. It smells weird. I have a food and water bowl, a huge comfy bed, and a little garden. Auntie JoJo lives next door. I quite like it here; yep this barn will do just fine.

Auntie JoJo went home. It’s just me and mum now. I spent a few minutes pottering around the front room. All these new smells, not sure of them at all!!!!

Everything is just so strange so I decide the best thing to do is pee EVERYWHERE to make the barn smell of me!!!! Once the front room was sorted I moved to the dining room. Blimey more places to pee..... Uhmmmmm think I just try to squeeze myself under this chair and have sniff about. I can smell something.....I have smelt this smell before and I know just what it is!!!!

So there I am under the table and chair, my arse sticking out and all of a bloody sudden I feel something hanging off my tail.....what the fck!!!! I back out quick.....bang my head on the chair....turn round.....and there it is....it’s a smell I know....Its Boo....a cat!!!!

Errrr who the fck are you???

My name is Bob; I am your new brother.

Awww sorry pal, mum told me bout you. You no well so I no allowed jumping on your head, hang from your tail, chase you about the house or box you on the nose!!! No much I am allowed to do by the sounds of it!!! So I just going go outside for some playing.....has the feeling you might be a bit on the boring side......laters!!!

    Where did she go??

    Where did she go???

She was here a minute ago and now she disappeared. Was that Boo, my new sister?

At that very moment.....I fell in love. It was mutual. She had been so happy because when she saw my arse she thought it was Piper (her other brother), back home again. She got a little shock when she realised I wasn’t Piper but after about 3 seconds we had bonded.

I followed her outside, wanted to see what this little girl with BIG attitude was up to.....had no idea what ‘playings’ meant to be honest. We ran round the garden, well I am not able to run, I can hardly walk!! So thought the best idea was to just start peeing everywhere!!! Then, exhausted, I went to my new bed.

That was it, I was home.

Mum was sat on the sofa, a new sense of peace and calm descended on the house. Not a sound was to be heard. We sat in the quietness for a while. We were just getting comfortable in each others’ presence. It was like I had always been there.

I am very poorly. I don’t look it because I am all fluffy, but as mum ran her hand over my body she felt every bone. I am just bone with some fur on. I can hardly walk, but can only rest for about half hour at a time. Despite having a lovely bed with a memory foam mattress it is still too sore on my old bones to rest for long. I have to keep getting up and move about and then lie down again. But as I lie on my bed, mum keeps stroking me softly, it is
