    Prologue

THE MORNING SUN SHONE blisteringly hot over Lancaster County as fourteen-year-old Samuel, his nine-year-old sister Judith, and their daed Mark Hershberger harvested the family crop of sweet corn. Breeze rustled through deep green rows, tickling sweat damp skin but providing little relief from the heat. The cornfield was fifteen by fifteen rows, yielding enough to cook, can, and send some to market besides. It was a big job for only the three of them, but after Samuel and Judith, Esther had borne only two kinner, all girls, and all too young for such hot, heavy work.

For Samuel, having time with his daed interrupted by his irritating little sister was a disappointment, one that sent him dashing ahead through the rows, dry earth tickling his bare, calloused feet, to prove that he could gather more corn, more quickly, than his younger attachment. In his heart, he knew it was unfair to both his daed and his sister to see it in this way. His daed, though he did his best to show a strong face, had been less energetic recently, and prone to bouts of dizziness. As a result, his usual patience was frayed, causing him to snap at Samuel's mamm or Samuel, spurts of anger for which he immediately and shamefully apologized.  But still...better to get this harvesting done quickly so that they all could sit down on the relative cool of the porch and enjoy glasses of mamm's lemonade while the cows grazed listlessly in the humid air.

Having filled his basket halfway, Samuel ran back to his daed to show his progress. His sister Judith was walking slowly beside their daed, her skirt tied up between her legs, and she pointed at something in the rows. Their daed shook his head and started explaining about the corn. Samuel didn't like his daed's color. The heat had everyone sweating, but his daed's round, cheerful face was far too red, and his skin seem to be pouring water beneath his broad brimmed hat.

Samuel forced a smile, rocking on his feet as he held out the basket to his daed. ″I've gotten down to the end of the row.″ Samuel added hopefully, ″We'll be finished before luncheon.″ It would be better for all of them to get out of the sun. He'd heard his mamm last night talking again of sending his daed to an Englischer doctor, and looking at his daed now, Samuel agreed.

″That's a right plenty, Samuel,″ Mark said. ″Put that basket here in front of me and your sister.″

Samuel did. His daed's arms shook as he knelt over the cobs and began to rifle through them.   ″These are...″ he took a deep breath and leaning against the basket, took off his hat and began to fan himself with it. ″Very good, son.″

Samuel's stomach clenched with fear. ″Are you okay, daed? It isn't one of your attacks again, is it?″

″I'm fine, Samuel. Just the heat.″ But Mark swayed, leaning more of his weight on the fragile basket, warping the weave as he tried to catch his balance.

″Daed!″ Judith exclaimed, grabbing him from behind to help steady him.

″I'm fine, Judy-light,″ Mark said, a forced cheer in his tone. ″It might be best if I sit for a bit, though, right here. Can one of you get something cold to drink from your mother?″

″I'll go!″ Samuel said and ran for the house. No matter what his daed said, he didn't look good. Samuel would bring his mamm and something cool to drink, and hopefully his daed would recover himself enough to get back to the house and lay down. Though it was only a short distance, Samuel's chest was burning and sweat stung his eyes and he took the stairs of the porch two at a time and flinging open the door screamed, ″Mamm! Mamm! It's daed, he's sick and he needs something to drink!″

Esther shouted from the kitchen. ″Samuel, slow down! I can't hear you. What's going on?″

Following his mamm's voice, Samuel padded barefoot down the hall, through the kitchen. It was marginally cooler in the house, with the windows wide open to catch whatever breezes God might grace them. Esther stood in front of the kitchen sink, washing dishes, while the third child Miriam dried them and the toddler Mary played on the floor with a set of wooden
