Chapter One
Cara loved Christmas music and could listen to it year round. In fact, she didn’t have to look for her favorite CD because it was already on rotation in the player. What she did do was load the remainder into the changer. She’d selected repeat on her system. The music blasted and Cara sang along with each track. She wasn’t sure how many times it had repeated. She just continued to sing and dance through the kitchen.
The thought of spending her first Christmas alone had Cara trying to do everything she usually did with her family. This included cooking. With the counter tops and island all filled with baking sheets, she was mixing another batch of cookies. Of course this didn’t count the dozens she’d already packaged up.
She had several boxed and ready to be shipped. That would be her first errand in the morning. She knew how disappointed her family was that she would not be able to come home for Christmas. Her hope was that sending them their favorite traditional cookie would help to ease the pain.
She planned to box the cookies that were now cooling and take them to work with her tomorrow. She hoped everyone there would appreciate the tasty treats. She had not been with the company long. They worked holidays on a rotating system, and she didn’t mind because she appreciated the overtime that came during this time of year. Keisha, her supervisor, was always nice about offering overtime to those who needed it. Considering any of the additional funds she earned were sent home to help with her family. She made a decent income there which was the reason she’d moved to North Carolina.
The timer sounded for her to remove the next batch from the oven. She was puzzled as she looked around for somewhere to sit the baking sheet. Not seeing any other space, she balanced the pan on the edge of the sink. She definitely needed to package more now. Walking to the corner to retrieve two of the decorative containers she’d purchased, she filled them for Keisha and the remainder she’d place in the individual snowflake and candy cane bags she’d purchased.
Once she’d bundled all those that were cool, she placed the empty sheet and racks into the dishwasher. She would bake the last batch she’d just mixed and allow them and those she’d just removed to cool overnight. It would probably be about midnight before she’d make it to bed.
Cara never had required much sleep, but she knew she needed to be well rested. She hadn’t made any errors on orders but she had seen the wrath of Keisha when others had. That was something she did not care to have happen to her. She needed to make sure she was alert, especially with the increase of orders coming in. The holidays were really picking up.

Matthew locked the door after the last person had left. The food kitchen had become even busier over the last few months. With the increasingly cold temperatures he knew how it was to just need a hot meal.
