Shady Grace

Shady Grace makes Northern Ontario her home, where the bush is so thick you can't see two feet past the tree line. Perhaps the mystery of the woods was what initially sparked her need to write. She adores strong alpha males who fall for fiery, independent women, in settings with humorous dialogue and action-filled plots. Shady believes love and sex should be exciting and unforgettable. Being able to write about it is better than cheesecake. Shady Grace is the new pen name of multi-published erotic author BL Bonita, who earned a starred review from Publishers Weekly for Dark Sun Rising. Visit her website at www.shadygrace.weebly.com, and find her on Facebook at www.facebook.com/shadygraceerotica.

    Chapter One

    Duluth, 1922

Mason Davidson lifted his face to the sky, allowing the rain to pummel his whiskered jaw. His new tweed suit was soaked clear through, and he knew he must resemble a wet rat. He should have been ashamed of his failure to take better care of himself on this particular day.

Olen Erichsen was not an easy man to impress, and Mason was about to meet his new uncle with a hangover to rival the clang of a church bell. Convincing the large and forbidding Norseman to accept him into the family would be the equivalent of landing a knockout in the ring and winning the match. But he would rather fight on familiar ground than traipse through a home filled with people he did not know—pretending to be a gentleman when he was far from it.

He sucked in a sharp breath through his teeth and continued along the path as the angry sky pissed down on him.

As he passed over the windy cobblestone path and made his way around gardens fit for a royal estate, a stunning, four-story mansion revealed itself through a break in the trees. He halted mid-step on the path—oblivious to the rain—as he took in the view of Valhalla Estate.

    Holy Christ.

    He whistled in appreciation.

Amelia had done well for herself.

Over a dozen windows spanned across each story, and that was just the front of the house. The red brick façade and white trim made the home stand out the way a beautiful lady would amidst a crowd of streetwalkers. Surrounded by the eastern Minnesota wilderness, the mansion was beautiful and out of place in this austere country.

Too rich for these savage woods.

He gathered his composure and continued down the path. He took the front steps two at a time and reached the front entrance, situated beneath a prominent balcony. Mason knocked against the wooden door, which was tall enough to allow a giant entry. After a few long moments, a massive man with deep-set blue eyes and wild white hair answered. Perhaps the architect had designed the door for him. Mason eyed the man’s size. The butler—he assumed the man was the butler—looked like a barbarian straight from the old country, and Mason had just become his latest quarry.

    What do you want?

Despite the harsh greeting, Mason plastered a smile on his face and decided now was as good a time as any to practice proper speech.

Good evening. I’m Mason Davidson, Mrs. Erichsen’s nephew. I believe I’m—

Late. You can wait in the sitting room. Dinner will be served shortly. The big man pointed with his chin to a doorway just off the foyer before disappearing down the corridor.

Mason stepped inside, feeling unwelcome and unwanted. The man could have at least offered him a towel, or even a smile. He closed the imposing door and entered the sitting room on his own.

The vast room shone like a beacon in the night, creating the atmosphere of a whole other world—the gold-leafed ceilings and walls almost blinded him. Mason noted the intricacy of the wood trim on the windows and doorframes and concluded it must be handcrafted. This home could rival the finest museum.

After brushing the back of his trousers and finding them reasonably dry, he took a seat on one of the wingback chairs. He swung one leg over the other and sat rigid—as if he belonged to this class of gentlemen who owned such luxurious surroundings. His white-knuckled grip on the armrests was testament to feeling out of his element.

As he waited, Mason continued his examination of the room. The extravagance of this place stood in such stark contrast to the slums he frequented back home in New York. Traipsing through the Five Points, a dirty, crime-infested slum, made him awkward and ill at ease in this rich, sophisticated place. He’d never be good enough for these people. He’d never belong.

Two huge palm plants flanked the picture window, which looked out over the front lawn. Through the window, he noted the green expanse of the lawn narrow to meet a stone bridge spanning a creek. This property belonged to a man with money, power, and good taste. Who else could afford to build a bridge across his lawn?

Remaining there for whatever time Amelia deemed necessary would not be easy. Feeling constricted, he reached up to loosen his collar. Soon sweat would linger over his brow. What little he knew of this place came from what Amelia had told him in her letter—the estate consisted of a mansion on a cliff, and the mansion was home to a family torn by some sinister presence or curse. He did not want to be there, but he would stay as long as Amelia wished. For Amelia, he would do just about anything.

A painting on the opposite wall caught his attention. Intrigued, Mason stood and wandered over to study the painting, clasping his hands behind his back.

Sigmund, you bugger. Where are y—

Startled, Mason straightened his back and turned around. He stared openmouthed at a young woman wearing a flapper hat low over her brow. A set of the lightest green eyes he had ever seen drew his full attention, and all coherent thought drained from his mind.

Holding a Lucky Strike between slender fingers, she stood there on the threshold, eyeing him in stunned curiosity. Mason held his breath and gaped back at her with shameless lust.

Her full lips, painted red, compelled him to toss caution aside and ravage her mouth. All that dark hair, cut above her shoulders in the latest flapper fashion, accentuated her lovely, oval face and those scandalous green eyes. And if that didn’t toy with his mind enough, her white blouse and tan trousers hugged her body like a second skin. Good God.

If Mason hadn’t been a worldly man, he would have an erection to rival stone.

He knew she was a defiant one from the stubborn tilt of her chin, and her fiery eyes as well. Knew it like he knew she’d be a vixen in bed.

I’m afraid I’m speechless. What’s your name, love?
