About this ebook

Crescent City Fae, Book 1

It's tough being a faery in New Orleans, a city fraught with vampires… especially when their very existence drains your life-force.

Willow Rhoswen, owner of The Fated Cupcake and part-time vampire hunter for the Void is having a rough week. Four years after her twin brother's mysterious death, Willow's life is threatened and the director saddles her with a new partner—her ex-boyfriend, David. To her horror, he's turned vamp, which causes her physical pain whenever she touches him… and any other specimen of the undead.

In order to save Willow's life, David agrees to turn double agent against the most powerful vampire organization in New Orleans. Or so he says. And she's convinced they know something about her brother's death. Unsure where David's loyalties lie, she turns to Talisen, her childhood crush, to help her solve the mystery.

Caught between two gorgeous men and a director who'll stop at nothing to control Willow's gifts, she'll have to follow her instincts and learn who to trust. Otherwise, she risks losing more than just her life.

I must admit that this title caught me by a bit of surprise. It should come as no shock (if you look at my reviews) that I love Urban Fantasy. Some of my all time favorite series are of this genre and I'm sure that list will just continue to grow as I find great new urban fantasy like this title Influential Magic. Now when I say that it kind of caught me by surprise, I don't mean to say that I thought it wouldn't be a good read, because let's be honest who reads a book by choice that they think they aren't going to like in the first place. I just mean to say the synopsis kind of sounded like a mix of a few of my favorite series, which is why it appealed to me in the first place. Now this is where the surprise came to me... although Chase's first installment of her Crescent City Fae series has all the initial elements that make an Urban Fantasy, she has still managed to create an original. With so many great series currently out there dominating this genre, creating an original story line is not an easy challenge, and Chase did a great job rising to the occasion. The other factor that surprised me was the expected love triangle. I had expected this title to be more focused on the romance elements and more on the two different men staking their claim on Willow. I was so pleasantly surprised that this was not exactly the case for Influential Magic. While there was an obvious mental tennis match going on in Willow's head and heart for the two men that were important to her, the romance was the background to the actual story as apposed to the usual vise verse we commonly see in many books lately. It was refreshing to read a title where I didn't have to be sold on the romance to enjoy the rest of the story. One other thing I enjoyed about this title was the mix of genre elements. Although it isn't listed as a mystery or an espionage, Influential Magic still gave readers a taste of both. Obviously the primary focus was still on paranormal and urban fantasy, but again it was nice to read a title that gave just a bit more than the usually expected. Overall, I very much enjoyed reading Chase's new series and can't wait to see what happens in the next installment Irresistible Magic, which I believe is due to be released in August 2013!

**basic summary** Alright so this book was essentially about a fae who was trying to figure out what happened to her brother who had died. She ends up tangled up with vampires, which she already has preconceived beliefs about which makes her hate them. She finds out her ex has become one! She still has feelings for him, but then there's the fae best friend which leads to a pretty brutal love triangle. Add to that a seemingly crazy vindictive aunt who wants to torture and murder her because of her special abilities....and well, you get one heck of a ride! What happens next? Read it to find out! :) **my thoughts** This book was wonderful. The ending wasn't exactly what I wanted it to be, but I can understand why it ended the way it did. Definitely an impressive book filled with plot twists and turns as well as an emotional roller coaster, especially when it comes to love! Was a great book and I definitely recommend it! The story was very well written and the characters were well developed and easy to connect to.

INFLUENTIAL MAGIC was an entertaining new urban fantasy novel that provides a new take on faeries and vampires. Willow Roswen is a faery complete with wings. Her magic is life magic. She uses her magic on herbs and other living things to infuse them with magic. She runs a cupcake shop and sell her projects. However, in her research, she has found some other products that could be put to questionable use. One of the most liable to misuse is a product that lets someone influence the person it is given to. It is especially being misused by her aunt who runs an organization called the Void.Willow is still haunted by the death of her twin brother. When her life is threatened, she is partnered with her ex-boyfriend who has become a vampire. Vampires and faeries don't mix. Vampires have death magic; faeries have life magic. Willow has a secret ability to sense vampires which makes her especially vulnerable to a vampire's touch. Willow is having a hard time getting over the change in her ex-boyfriend who had dumped her seemingly without reason. While she still loves him, she can no longer trust him or agree with the way he lives his life.As is usual in many urban fantasy novels, this one has a love triangle. In this case her other love interest in a faery named Talisen who was her brother's best friend and who has been her friend since they were children. Willow has had a crush on him forever but is afraid, that if their love doesn't work out, she will lose his friendship too. She has watched Talisen after relationship after relationship and doesn't want to be yet another failed relationship. This story has lots of plot lines One of them is the investigation into her brother's death. Still another has to do with the buying and selling, using and misusing of influence. Another yet has to do with her aunt's desire to send Willow to testing to find out why she can sense vampires and learn about another new power she has recently discovered. The story is well-written; the world building works; the characters are well-rounded and interesting people. Fans of urban fantasy will enjoy this one.

Willow is not your average young woman. She's a faery with vampire radar. And she makes a mean cupcake.
After spending the summer taking care of her mother & hanging with BMF Talesin, it's back to her bakery in New Orleans & normal routine. Or not. She's out vamp hunting with with best friend & witch Phoebe when she meets up with David, her ex. After a year together, he ended things by text. (Weasel!)
This is the first she's seen of him & something is different. New haircut? New clothes? No...it's the pointy fangs.
David is now a vamp, a being that physically repels Willow & saps her strength. But soon they'll be forced to work together by her crazy Aunt Maude. She's the director of the void, a branch of the supernatural authority Arcane. She used to be a sweet lady. Now she's borderline insane & doesn't seem to care if Willow lives or dies as long as she infiltrates the vampire corporation & finds who has been giving away fae/witch secrets.
David broke Willow's heart although spending time with Tal has helped her mend. He was always off linits as he was her twin brother Beau's best friend. But Beau was killed 4 years ago & Tal's feelings are anything but brotherly.
Life as she knew it is over. As Willow, Phoebe & David work undercover, they run p against plots within plots, strange alliances & a ton of secrets. No one is telling Willow the whole truth, friends have become enemies & vice versa 'til she doesn't know who to trust.
Thank God for Link, her Shih Tzu who morphs into a wolf when she needs protection. It's a steep learning curve as she discovers the truth about herself, Beau, David's family & Maude. And there's the annoying & constant battle of testosterone between Tal & David, with her as the prize.
The world building is good with interesting characters among the various supes. Willow is sweet, loyal & fragile, frequently requiring rescue as she tries to make sense of it all. She comes off as very young & slightly naive despite the carnage she sees in her job with the Void. This reads more like a YA adult with a lot of high drama & emotions, sweet kisses (no sex) & light swearing. Scenes with the vamps are more graphic & violent due to their take no prisoners style of doing business.
This is a quick, easy read suitable for teens & up. It's really just a matter of taste, how dark or light you prefer your paranormal books. If this is for you, book #2 "Irresistible Magic" is also available.

Here is a thing you need to know about this series: faeries and vampires are out in New Orleans. Magic is real, spells and charms can be sold, and there's an organization that fights magical crimes and hunts vampires.

Willow is a faery, a baker, and an agent of that magical organization: the Void. At her bakery she sells magical desserts, and for the Void she hunts vampires. Decades ago her father was murdered, four years ago her brother was, and now someone's threatening her. To keep her safe, the Void teams her up with a representative of the most powerful vampire organization in New Orleans. There's only one problem: that agent is her ex-boyfriend David who dumped her without a reason. It turns out that the reason might be that he was turned vamp. And on top of all this, her childhood crush and brother's best friend Talisen comes to town to help.

So, Willow's in a mess. She's being hunted for her abilities, some of which she's kept secret from nearly everyone. The director of the Void, her Aunt Maude, has become terrifyingly different and perhaps dangerous. Her ex and her crush hate each other, her roommate and partner Phoebe is keeping secrets, and every emotional swing is setting off her shape-changing Shih Tzu.

You're probably thinking that winged faeries wandering around New Orleans with magical cupcakes is a bad thing, or at least something so outlandish you won't bother reading it. Honestly, it fits so seamlessly into the world the author has created that you won't even think of it as odd after the first few chapters. This book and created-universe are nowhere near as light and fluffy as they seem. There's real danger there, and real problems.

Bottom line: I liked Willow and Phoebe, I liked the magical system at play, and I liked the hidden secrets. For those I dealt with the love triangle and all the secrets everyone kept from Willow.

I first came across Deanna Chase in 2012 with her book Haunted on Bourbon Street. The book, featuring Jade Calhoun, was set in New Orleans and features Jade, an empath, and a creative and interesting group of friends, including a couple of strip club owners, a coven, and couple of ghosts with very different agendas. Since then, I happily enjoyed both Witches of Bourbon Street and Demons of Bourbon Street. There are still two more (that I know of) in the series that I have already purchased and are sitting in my TBR pile waiting for their turn. And I am very much looking forward to them.

Influential Magic is also set in New Orleans, and is the first in a series subtitled Crescent City Fae. This new series stars Willow Rhoswen, owner of The Fated Cupcake and part-time vampire hunter for the Void. Oh, and she is also a faery – complete with wings and flight capabilities. Well, when she isn’t around vampires, whose walking death drains her earth magic, and thus her life force. A very uncomfortable position to be in when your evil faery auntie, who is also the Director of the Void policing agency partners you with a vampire in order to investigate dastardly deeds by the local vampire corporation. Especially when that vampire happens to be your ‘used-to-be-human’ used-to-be boyfriend. A boyfriend, who suddenly dumped you with a quick text message (jerk!), then turns up later turned – literally.

What happens to Willow in this volume of the Crescent City series is a neat bit of creative urban fantasy, but it also carries an undercurrent of politics and xenophobia which reflects what is happening in this world, this reality, even now. I am, admittedly, not a ‘vampire groupie’ as so many are these days. Been there, done that, would really like for that whole ‘cold, dead, walking corpses’ to be over already. I mean, come on – have you ever felt a real corpse? Gross. I couldn’t imagine kissing cold, dead lips, much less getting down and dirty with other parts! However, in Chase’s alternate universe, her vampires are, though still cold and walking dead, much more ‘real’ people than others in the genre, with lives and families whom they love – even if they are still overwhelmingly entitled, making them both vicious and brutally efficient killers when crossed.

Overall, I really liked Willow. She takes a lot of damage, both physically and emotionally in this first book, and overall she handles it well. I did find her rather naïve at times, railing against those who would take care of issues in a vigilante fashion, while openly acknowledging that the governmental agencies are deeply corrupt. At the same time, I honestly admired her for understanding the siren song of power and how it can so easily corrupt.

The fantasy storyline is creative, well written, and believable as an alternative reality of a world which evolved under magical conditions, while still aligning closely with our own. There is a bit of a triangle aspect, between Willow and David, the vamp ex boyfriend and Talisen, her childhood friend and mentor who is another faery. The triangle seems to correct itself at the end, and I honestly hope that the concept doesn’t carry on through the other books, as I find those sorts of story lines to be crutches for poor story development. However, the Shih Tzu that turns into a wolf? Awesome! And I hope that Willow will be spending more time in her bakery, creating magically infused cupcakes, and more time with her best friend, Phoebe, a witch. There were a lot of ends left free, leaving room for a great deal of really good story development as we learn more about Willow, her skills, and her family and friends. And having listened to the Audible Edition, narrated by Gabra Zackman, one of my favorite narrators of all time, there was a whole other level of enjoyment that I was able to gain from the book. And right now, Influential Magic is only $1.99 for the Audible Edition! What's not to like? Especially when it is also text-to-speech enabled for the Kindle edition. I prefer the Audible editions, as I can download them onto my Zune and pop it into my pocket while I am doing other things, but having it in both editions means I can read it any way I wish. Cool...

Don't let the cover fool you, there are no meek Tinkerbells in INFLUENTIAL MAGIC. The faeries are fierce supernatural creatures who can hold their own with the vampires and other paranormal things. Willow owns a cupcake shop where she sells goodies that she alters with her fae gifts in different ways. You can buy relaxation, influence, things to keep you awake, you get the idea. She also works as a hunter for the void but doesn't really enjoy it and the director happens to be her evil aunt. Willow's boyfriend of a year David broke up with her via text message and she has spent the last couple of months wondering why. She never imagined it was because he turned vampire and now she is stuck working closely with him on a new case. Talison was her brothers best friend when he was alive, she is very close to him and although they flirt a lot and she has feelings for him she never took it farther because she has never wanted it to ruin their relationship, oh and he is a player. They really are cute together though and I loved seeing them in action. I wish there would have been some more Talisen and Willow love time. I know it's not a paranormal romance but there is a love triangle and David had some love time so I would have liked more Talison love time. I very much enjoyed her little side kick Link. You will have to read the story to find out about his shape shifting coolness. INFLUENTIAL MAGIC is a fun simple read with some nice action and mystery thrown in. The characters make the book and I will be waiting to read book 2.
