About this ebook
‘Doctor Davis, why is it that you have decided to go on this mission and abandon the more exclusively feminine activities of household duties and meal preparation?’
Murdoch and his companions are about to head off into space, to be the first humans to set foot on the magenta planet Mars. And, yes, in the 1950s, a woman is abandoning her homely duties to make such an expedition.
Murdoch and his crew make excellent time. So excellent, that they have used up all their gas. Perhaps they will find some intelligent life and a filling station?
After finding some life, they are invited back for dinner - not realising that they are the dinner.
Will Murdoch and his companions survive dinner? Will they find their way back to Earth? And will Doctor Davis get back in the kitchen where she belongs?
This satirical story is written in the tradition of B-Grade stories, complete with all the stereotypes, creativity and effects – flaws and all.
The characters are purely fictitious. Any similarities with any person, living or dead, are entirely coincidental.
The story is not meant to offend. If you may be offended, please don’t download it.

Once more we hear the eerie Theremin music begin and we know that we are not out of the woods, as far as spooky stuff goes, yet. But wait! The grey scene behind the white titles shows us a rocket ship towering high above us with its tip gradually tapering into a point. It is a spaceship but this time an Earth spaceship, not one of those aluminium pie dish jobs! We know that it has real, honest-to-goodness rocket engines under it to propel it into the heavens and not some odd power known only to a technically advanced race from some distant galaxy. We can tell this by that pointed top which glints against the dull grey sky and what appears to be a rope that connects it to a tower that stands parallel to it. The Theremin continues to play and is joined by some strings. We believe that we must still be somewhere in the nineteen fifties. Then the name MURDOCH appears and our stomach lurches. We will not be saved this time and we momentarily wonder once again what sin we committed to deserve this. It is best to just sit back and relax—if we can. We probably won’t be able to—we haven’t since we first saw this man in a jungle with a python wrapped around his torso—but we can only try. Then the scene darkens and everything is black. We are sitting in a room with a long desk behind which sit five people; four men and one woman. The men wear leather bomber jackets, shirts and ties. The woman wears a tight turtleneck jumper which accentuates her high, pointed breasts. A disembodied voice begins: Ladies and Gentlemen. The crew of Rocketship XM-25B . . .
We see the man sitting to our left behind the desk in close up. His name, the voice tells us, is Major Ronnie Crimpen. He puts us in mind of Rory Calhoun. Then we move to the next person and we are introduced to Doctor Joe Jablonski, the ship’s doctor. He reminds us of Richard Carlsson. Next we meet Airman Ted Finkel. He puts us in mind of Chil Wills. Not being a major, he is sure to be the Average Joe who simply flies the rocketship, devoid of any real technical knowledge. He will more than likely panic in times of stress and wantonly shoot any alien being he comes across. Next we meet the delightful Dr Pamela Davis, scientist and all round nice person. She smiles and
