About this ebook

On a working vacation in Montana, Chef Gabi Inez’s schedule allows her to enjoy planned activities and hangout with her cousin and his new family. She’s not looking for love, but spending time with a hunky cowboy sounds perfect. Gabi works hard, but every girl needs some fun. What if flirting leads to something more?

Sam Malone is the brains behind Blackbird, a guest and working ranch. Since his parents’ death, his sole purpose has been family and the ranch’s survival. Burned by love in the past, he avoids the distraction that comes with beautiful women. But what’s a cowboy to do when a sweet and sassy chef gets under his skin, only to be told by her overprotective cousin she’s off limits?

    Chapter One

Sam took a large swig of pure caffeinated heaven. Coffee, strong and black, just the way he liked it. He leaned his head against a fist. Hell, he hadn’t meant to stay up until 3:00 a.m. working on the ranch’s financial projections. Time had gotten away from him. Again.

Cookie set a heaping plate of eggs, bacon, and hash browns in front of him. His stomach rumbled with the savory smell of the hearty breakfast. No cold cereal served here.

Elbows off the table. The gentle squeeze to his shoulder softened her crisp tone.

Jared and Nathan plopped down in their chairs, arguing about college football. The fall term had just started, but the Cat/Griz rivalry was already ramping up with those two.

Inside voices, boys, she chided. Short, round, and with snow-white hair, Cookie resembled Mrs. Claus—except when she scowled like a stern schoolteacher.

He frowned. You’d think they were kids instead of men well into their twenties the way she carried on. Hell, he was turning thirty next month, for Christ’s sake. Nate lobbed a biscuit across the table hitting Jared in the head. Well, maybe she had a point.

It’d been like living in a frat house since his older brother Wyatt and Wyatt’s husband, Rafael, moved out, claiming a smaller house on the property for their own. Lucky them. At least with Brett back at college, Sam had the second floor all to himself again. Except for the next week…. A piece of scrambled egg smacked him in the eye.

Nate, knock that shit off. He swiped at his face with a napkin and glared at his brother.

Cookie’s been trying to get your attention, dude.

Sam half turned. Yep, their cook slash surrogate mother peered at him, her eyebrows bunched.

    Sorry, you were saying?

Rafael and Wyatt left to pick up Gabriela from the airport. She’s staying here at the house, so you boys need to mind your manners and be on your best behavior. She leveled a meaningful glare at Nate. Rafael said hands off.

Translation: He would unman anyone who touched his cousin.

Nate put a hand to his chest. I’m wounded. I’m always on my best behavior. And why are you only looking at me?

Because I’m gay, and the only figures Sam notices are the ones in his beloved spreadsheets. Jared smirked.

He flipped his younger brothers the bird when they cracked up. Boneheads.

Cookie rolled her eyes and muttered under her breath before striding out of the dining room.

Jared drummed his fingers on the table. So, which one was Gabriela again?

I think she was the cute, chubby one, Nate said.

Sam frowned. Chubby, my ass. A few months after his brother’s wedding reception, and he couldn’t stop thinking about the sexy woman in the classy burgundy dress. Her big, chocolate-brown eyes and full-wattage smile were a powerful combo. Short and curvy, she was a pint-sized goddess.

Oh, yeah. How could I forget? Didn’t she clock some drunk dude in the junk? Jared asked.

    She certainly had.

A gorgeous brunette gracefully moved to a pulsing Latin beat on the dance floor. Her energy and laughter drew Sam’s attention from across the room. Whatever Brett was saying faded into the background. Stunning. She stopped laughing when a man jerked her roughly into his arms. Sam thrust his beer to his brother without a word and was in motion.

As he shouldered his way through the dancers, the man grabbed her butt while she shoved at him. She wrenched free and turned to leave, but the bastard grasped her shoulder, yanking her backward. Sam swore and closed in on them. Quick as lightning, she clamped onto the offending hand for leverage, stepped wide, and nailed the asshole first with an elbow to the stomach and then swung her arm in a downward arch, slamming her fist into his balls. Her elbow pegged the asshole’s face on his downward trajectory to the floor. A cheer rose up from the dancers when the man face-planted.

Two of Wyatt and Rafael’s friends yanked the shithead up and dragged him out of the room. The woman marched off the dance floor, barely acknowledging the praise she received. Sam trailed after her, compelled to make sure she was
