    We saw a greeting card once that had an interesting message. The cover had a person wearing large dark glasses and the caption read “LOVE IS BLIND.” Inside it said, “BUT MARRIAGE IS DEFINITELY AN EYE OPENER.” How true. How true. For some of us it is more of an eye opener than we realized. What caused that? Change.

    Many say that the only constant in life is change and many of us agree with that statement. There certainly are a lot of changes in our lives and in the world. The awareness of constant change is one of the reasons for this book. My wife Jane and I, Jack, want to show you a path you can follow to successfully navigate the ocean of changes coming your way.

    In this book we use baseball teams as an analogy for what happens between couples in marriage because baseball players practice to keep their skills sharp and to improve them. This is exactly what married couples should do to keep their marriage strong and healthy. We hope you enjoy baseball or softball, either as a participant or a spectator. But if you don’t, we hope you can still see the connection. As you go through the program outlined in this book, we suggest that you see yourself in a training camp. There to help guide you and give you helpful tips are your manager, Rudy, and coaches Gabriel and Lou. One goal of this All-Star Marriage Training Camp is to prepare you to weather change and keep your marriage on a steady course.

    The phrase “Practice makes perfect” certainly applies here. The All-Star Marriage Training Camp will lay out an orderly path for you and your spouse to live the married life of your dreams. Good luck and hang in there. You’ll be glad you did.

      FIRST INNING

      COMMUNICATING EFFECTIVELY

      The Baseball Prayer

      Dear God,

      Help me to be a good sport in the game of life. I don’t ask for an easy place in the lineup. Put me anywhere you need me. I only ask that I can give you 100% of all I have. If all hard drives seem to come my way, I thank you for the compliment. Help me remember that you never send a player more trouble than he can handle.

      Help me, Oh Lord, to accept the bad breaks as part of the game. And may I always play on the square, no matter what the others do. Help me to study the book so I’ll know the rules.

      Finally, God, if the natural turn of events goes against me and I’m benched for sickness or old age, please help me to accept that as part of the game, too. Keep me from whimpering or squealing that I was framed or that I got a raw deal. And when I finish the final inning, I ask for no laurels. All I want is to believe in my heart that I played as well as I could and that I didn’t let you down.

      Communications is one of the bedrock building blocks of a successful marriage as it is with a winning team. We need to let our spouse know what we are thinking about and where we are headed. We’re going to review the levels of communication. Please pay particular attention to the second, third, and fourth levels of communication in the scouting report.

      In my opinion, Snake and the worldly group will throw some of their old timers against you in order to keep you from improving your communication skills. But there are several players on our team that are every bit their equal and then some.

      1st INNING—Communicating Effectively

      Here in the conference room we have the latest audio and visual equipment, but this training camp shows us that the most important aspect of successful communicating in married life is found in the open and honest sharing of our thoughts and feelings.
