Max, what’s the plan? Rachel said as she put on her visor and breathing gear. We were the first two fire trucks on site. The apartment building stood four stories high; the first vertical half was engulfed in flames. The balconies for each floor ran across all apartments, separated by frosted glass dividers.

A plume of flame suddenly burst out of the first-floor windows. My god, the wind was making things worse, fuelling the incineration of the apartment. Its howl made it sound like there were ravaging wolves in the air.

There were people from the apartment below gathering at the bottom. Police had sealed off the area, and were taking them to safety. Absolute chaos. There was an odd sight of two blokes who came out in handcuffs, and lay on the pavement coughing.

One of the officers came up to me. He shouted, Those were the last two! We managed to evacuate the first and second floors. The third and fourth we don’t know.

I turned to Rachel and Rico. Get the guys to set up the lines and suppress the fire. Let’s stop the spread so we can breach from the other side and clear the floors. I was about to run back to the truck when the officer grabbed my arm. He was on his radio.

    Wait!

    What?

    It’s for you.

I held the radio against my ear. This is Max Reynolds, Fire and Rescue.

Max, my name is Anna, Operation commander from the Organised Crime and drug unit. We have two of our people stuck on the fourth floor who require assistance.

Copy that. Please confirm fourth floor. Which apartment? I held the radio as I looked up, the black-grey smoke distorting my view. I couldn’t see anything.

Anna said. Fourth floor confirmed. I'll patch you through to his frequency shortly.

Rachel and Rico were helping the other fire crew connect to the fire hydrants. I waved to them to call them over. I want you two to breach without me. I have two people stuck on the fourth floor so I’ll get up there via the bucket on the ladder truck. We will clear the floors, then meet halfway. Understood?

    They both shouted, Yes Captain!

They ran to the truck to equip their oxygen tanks while I equipped my axe and tank. I got the other guys to deploy the legs on the ladder truck and get it ready. Two other appliances arrived. The local police force was holding back some people who wanted to grab their belongings. Rachel and Rico were at the entrance ready to breach the first floor. I was just about to enter in the bucket when a man burst through the barrier. He tried to follow after Rachel and Rico.

I grabbed his shirt. Hey! We got our people in there!

He pleaded, Please sir! My daughter’s inside. Please sir, I have to save her… He pointed up and then he put his hands on his head. The tears were rolling down his face. His wife soon joined in, crying and shrieking. My baby! My baby! A cop pulled her back.

I said to the father, "What floor is she on?

Apartment 3C! Please sir, I beg you! Please get her! I patched through to Rachel,

"Get to the third floor, apartment 3C.
