    Chapter One: Introduction

Native Son by Richard Wright was first published in 1940. It was originally the title of Nelson Algren’s first novel, Somebody in Boots. The story of that novel was based on a piece of doggerel about the first Texan.

In the year 1933, Algren and Wright met at John Reed Club and then they worked together at a project. It is said that Nelson Algren gave the title Native Son to Richard Wright.

The story revolves around a young back American named Bigger Thomas. He is 20 years old. The story is set in the 1930s. Thomas lives in extreme poverty in a poor area on Chicago’s South Side.

It is a highly revealing story that describes the real story of the lives of the black youths who had to face problems first because of their background and second because the white people saw them as different.

At present the book is frequently discussed among literary circles and it has found its place in several academic institutions around the world.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

As the novel opens, we meet Bigger Thomas. The sound of the alarm clock brings him out of his sleep in his dark and small room. He and his brother Buddy, his sister Vera, and their mother live in one room.

Suddenly, with the appearance of a rat in the room a kind of maelstrom is created. The rat is violently chased. Bigger Thomas kills the rat with an iron skillet. Vera is terrified to see that. She faints. His mother scolds Bigger Thomas.

It transpires that Bigger Thomas hates his family because the members of the family suffer and he is not able to do anything about them.

In the evening, Bigger is supposed to meet Mr. Dalton for a new job. His family depends on him. He wants to be free from his responsibilities but there is no way which he sees in front of him.

Having left his room, Bigger goes to meet his friend Gusiffer R. in the poolroom. Bigger and Gusiffer have a conversation. Bigger informs him that whenever he thinks about whites he feels that something terrible will happen to him.

In the poolroom, they meet other friends, G. H. and Jack. They discuss their plan and eventually come with the idea of a robbery. They plan to rob the white wealth. Although they are worried about attacking and robbing a white man, no one discloses his feeling.

Before they commit the robbery, Bigger and Jack go to watch a movie. In the movie they see the world of whites. They see the primitive black people with the tom toms. However, they feel that they are equal to those worlds.

Coming out of the cinema, Bigger goes back to the poolroom and attacks Gus violently. He forces Gus to lick his blade. Actually, he wants to hide his own cowardice. The plan of robbery disappears after the fight. Bigger does not remember for sure that he has done it intentionally.

Bigger Thomas finally gets the job. However, he does not know how to behave in a big and luxurious house. He begins to
