About this ebook
Wayne Lonergan was jailed for more than 20 years for the bludgeoning/strangling death of his socialite/heiress wife, Patricia Burton Lonergan. The 22-year-old beauty was murdered while he was in New York City on October 24, 1943. Lonergan joined the Royal Canadian Air Force following one of many arguments that he had with his wife. Wayne, an Irishman, had wed the Jewish heiress, whose family name was originally Bernheimer. The family fortune, a beer dynasty, was established by Max Bernheimer, Patricia's grandfather. The young couple eloped to Las Vegas in 1940 after the death of the heiress' father William O. Burton. A regular attendee at the finest nightclubs in New York, Patricia was escorted to the Stork Club on the evening of her murder by a 43-year-old divorced Italian interior decorator. They did not return until a taxi dropped them off at Patsy's residence around 6 a.m. on the morning of the murder. Patricia was found completely naked on her bed inside the opulent triplex where she lived at 313 East 51st Street in Manhattan.

Patricia Burton Lonergan (1921-October 24, 1943), 22, heiress to a New York beer fortune, was buried on October 26, 1943 in Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York. Her husband, Wayne Thomas Lonergan, waived extradition from Toronto Canada where he was serving as an air cadet in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF).

Wayne waived extradition proceedings because he loved his wife and baby, 18-month-old Wayne William Lonergan.
The RCAF cadet was denied an opportunity to attend his wife’s funeral and was instead subjected to questioning throughout the day of October 26th. Altogether he endured more than eighty hours of police interrogation. Wayne had joined the RCAF in September, the month before Patricia’s murder. He had enlisted after a trivial argument with his wife.
Less than twenty people attended the service for the lovely Mrs. Patricia Lonergan. Wayne Lonergan continued to deny complicity in his wife’s brutal slaying while he was grilled with questions by Assistant New York City District Attorney John Loehr (May 6, 1902-February 3, 1992).
Patricia Lonergan died only a short time after she had filed for separation from her husband. When she left him Patricia cut Wayne entirely out of her will. The couple had eloped to Las Vegas in 1940 following the death of her father William O. Burton. William had changed his family’s surname from Bernheimer to Burton during World War I. After they were married Wayne and his wife regularly drank and enjoyed themselves in New York City’s finest nightclubs for nights on
