    Who speaks for God? Matthew 23 is the last of Jesus’ public ministry, and the clearest contest between Jesus and the Pharisees in answering this question. The purpose of this book is to investigate the confrontation between Jesus, as Messiah, and the Pharisees, as teachers of the law, in Matthew 23. The reason for this confrontation is important, and Matthew has used rhetorical and literary devices in his writing to portray Jesus as the supreme servant of God who stands as the representative of the honor of God’s name. Matthew has also used the social structures and cultural values of honor, patronage, kinship, and purity in Jesus’ denunciation of the Pharisees in order to demonstrate that Jesus is truly the one worthy of honor in the sight of God.
