About this ebook

What this book is about
This book is about seniors, focusing especially on those seniors in need, as those who are forced to seek outside help due to advancing age, an incapacitating stroke, or due to suffering from Alzheimer’s, or some other form of dementia. This book will be of help to those are planning to work with seniors as a front line worker in a caregiving facility, or working for a Company which hires workers to work with seniors, or if you are thinking of being self-employed in working with seniors, or even for those planning to have a ministry to seniors. The book is divided into three major sections, “Understanding Seniors,” “Working With Seniors,” and “Ministering To Seniors.” The author takes a balanced view throughout, between the needs of the seniors and their families on the one hand, and those who work with seniors to make a living on the other hand.
About the author
Roger Henri Trepanier is now in his 26th year of working with seniors, principally as a ministry. At one time, he seriously considered being an administrator in a caregiving facility and obtained a two year certificate in Long Term Care Management. This is the author’s eighth published work.

    INTRODUCTION

I must confess to my readers at the outset that this has not been an easy book for me to write. Not that the subject is not an important one, and not that God did not want me to write it. But as I shared with a friend recently, the last twenty-five years of working with seniors have not been easy years. As anyone who has ever worked with seniors knows, it is a demanding task, especially if one is dealing with seniors who have become incapacitated in one way or another and have found themselves in a caregiving facility, which was not of their free choice to begin with. They do not want to be there, which makes it hard for everyone, and what compounds the problem for them even more is that they suddenly find themselves totally dependent on others for all of their needs, which is not something any person is ever prepared for. Therefore, there is an immense amount of adjustment which is required on the part of the senior, with many never really coming to grips with their situation before they pass from this life. What this means for those who work with these seniors and for those who are led of God to minister to them is that it is almost always a one way street. In other words, one always needs to be in a ‘giving/serving’ mode, with no expectation of anything in return when working with the great majority of these seniors. As a result, one can easily become drained of all energy by the time each day ends. And of course the danger is to come to the place where one is not in a ‘giving/serving’ mode, so that one starts looking at the seniors as a burden to be dealt with, rather than as a person to be cared for.

And so this book has been difficult for me because it has meant looking back over the last twenty-five years and bring back to mind many people and situations, with which there are many emotions attached. It many cases, it has meant re-living those situations over again, and most of these have been painful. Then to be fair to seniors, it is not only working with the seniors which has been a challenge, but often it is dealing with the caregiving facility itself, both management and staff. Wherever there are people, there is a possibility for friction. Now friction is necessary for the proper functioning of some mechanical devices, however, it can add an unneeded burden to an already burdened caregiver.

And so this book’s primary focus will be on those men and women who are in what we can call a caregiving facility - whatever name one wishes to call it, for the name varies from country to country - as those who have to be there, and not because they want to be there. And the book is intended for those men and women who would like to work with seniors in such a situation, either as one’s employment or as part of one’s ministry. And although we will look at what is involved in caring for seniors in a caregiving facility setting primarily, but not exclusively, much of what is discussed will still be applicable to seniors wherever they are found. For the reality is that in many ways we all share many things in common. We all enter this life in the same way, through our mother’s womb, and all exit the same way, through death. We all start out with no teeth and in the great majority of cases, we end up the same way. The first thing we get slapped on our bottom is a diaper and that is often what we end life wearing again, although the seniors who wear them call them ‘pads.’ And just as an infant we required a bib and help when eating, now in the senior years it has become an ‘apron’ and that help is again required. Often, the only difference is that there is now pride involved, which we need to honor!

What would be helpful for one to know at the outset is that this book has been divided into three sections. In the first section, which in titled, Understanding Seniors, we look at seniors in general, pointing out that seniors do not fit into preconceived molds, even though seniors do have many needs in common with other seniors. We also examine typical life situations that seniors can find themselves in, including some of the issues facing seniors in our day, such as euthanasia, suicide, and care rationing. We close that first section with the suggestion that we all look around us where we live and realize that we are not an island unto ourselves, meaning that there are people in need that we can be helping, one such group being seniors.

Then in the second section, which is titled Working with Seniors, we look at the challenges facing the seniors in a caregiving facility to begin with, giving one an idea of what takes place in a caregiving facility on any given day, before we turn to look at the challenges facing the workers themselves in a caregiving facility. For what is important to keep in mind at the outset is that whereas there are challenges on both sides of the fence, yet both sides are necessary to each other. In other words, even though most seniors do not go to a caregiving facility until they are forced to do so, nevertheless, that facility is needed for when they do require that care. And of course, once the seniors are there, then the workers are needed to care for them!

What we also look at in the second section is the three types of workers who will be working with seniors, either in their home or in a caregiving facility. First, we look at the workers employed by the caregiving facilities, then the workers hired by Companies which hire workers to work with seniors, then at the workers who are self-employed and working with seniors. We further then deal in depth with the skills and traits required for each type of worker, for one of the aims of this book is to secure not only those who are qualified to work with seniors, but more importantly those who are best suited to work with seniors in terms of their makeup and temperament.

The third and last section of the book, which is titled, Ministering to Seniors, deals with what one needs to consider before getting involved with seniors as a ministry, either in their home or in a caregiving facility, which could include a hospital. There are suggestions made on how to setup such a ministry and who should get involved in such a ministry. Then we close this section by looking at many typical situations which might occur and often occurs in carrying out such a ministry. We do so, not to discourage anyone, but in order that those who do get involved with seniors do so with their eyes fully open.

The book then closes with an Addendum, where we present a chapter on coming to know God in a personal way, for those reading the book who do not have such a relationship with our Creator, but who would like to. The final chapter of the Addendum and of the book is there as a help for those ministering to seniors who may not know what the gospel is and how to share that gospel with those seniors they will be ministering to, who do not yet know God in a personal way.

What can be gathered then by what has been written so far is that this book is largely intended for people of faith who desire to work with seniors, whether as a ministry or as of one’s fulltime employment. By the time this book is published, the author will be in his 26th year of working with seniors as a ministry. Therefore, what is said by the author to those who want to work with seniors as one’s employment, or who are already working with seniors, is based on observations during the last 25 years and also from having consulted with friends who have been working with seniors as their employment, or in some other ways, for many years.

It should also be mentioned that I do have a two year diploma in Long Term Care Management from an accredited institution. A few years ago, a friend of a friend of mine was looking at the author to be the administrator for a caregiving facility for seniors this man was planning to build at the time. As things turned out, the sewage treatment plant in the part of the city where this facility was to go was determined to not have the capacity to handle the demand this facility would place on it, and as a result this man’s application for construction was turned down. And I never did become the administrator of this man’s caregiving facility for seniors.

What should also be mentioned in closing the Introduction, is that after completing 21 years of formal education and then spending almost 28 years working in Project Engineering in the corporate offices of a large utility, God called His servant as an evangelist in early 1999, then sent him out over 2000 miles away from family and friends, to the place of service God assigned, and where His servant has been and is still serving Him. The author is an evangelist, counselor, and publisher, serving God in the place of service God sent him to over fifteen years ago. This is his eight published work, with a ninth book in the planning stages, as can be seen from the back of the book, where the next book is briefly mentioned. The author is a widower with three adopted children.

God also led His servant to establish another website specifically for gospel ministry, since the author is an evangelist. That website can be found at:

    http://www.servantofmosthigh.com

And now my prayer is that God will richly bless you as you read this book, that He will greatly minister to your every need in your life, and that He will guide you as what He would have you do in working with seniors, as only God can!

ONE SHOULD NOT RESENT GROWING OLDER.

IT IS A PRIVILEGE DENIED TO MANY!

    UNDERSTANDING SENIORS

SENIORS DO NOT ALL FIT IN THE SAME MOLD!

This book is about seniors, meaning those who have reached what can be called ‘one’s senior years.’ It is true that the word senior can be used in a number of different ways. For example, one can be the senior partner in a law firm, or an accounting firm or in any other business, without necessarily being a senior in the way we use the term in this book. At one time, it was easier to define what a senior was compared to today, since then one was considered a senior when one reached the mandatory age of retirement at 65. However, in many countries and states in the world, this mandatory age limit has been abolished due to the critical demand for workers, and especially for those with experience.

It is also true that many countries and even many businesses within a country regard the term senior in different ways, even when still looking at an elderly man or woman. For instance, some businesses give a discount for seniors, whom they define as being 50 years of age and above, even if most of these people still work at some form of fulltime employment. Other businesses give that discount
