Losers, Idiots and Thieves - Treat Preston

    Introduction – The Herd Mentality

    http://nachalooman.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/herd-mentality.jpg

Thanks for purchasing my book!!  I’m Dr. Treat Preston and as you read this book, be prepared to be amazed.  I have been a behavioral scientist for over thirty two years and the topics of my books are not only provocative but get to the heart of the matter for the selected topic.

I will readily admit that the title of this book, Losers, Idiots and Thieves is pretty provocative but the subject of this book is not.  All across the world people are wondering why some people succeed while others fail and the attitudes they take after suffering loss is really the most provocative subject of all so I will eagerly address this topic and lay to rest some of the wrongful thinking on the subject.

I will start with The Herd Mentality.  The subject of success and failure is one that is often researched at our company AppliedMindSciences.com.  We conduct a good amount of research into the human condition and this is one of my favorite research subjects.

Along with me and the other eleven staff behavioral scientists of AppliedMindSciences.com, we appreciate the fact that AppliedMindSciences.com provides us with the resources needed to conduct our individual research subjects and then provides us with a publishing platform – ePubWealth.com – that allows us to share our research with our thousands of readers.  I want to personally thank ePubWealth.com and AppliedMindSciences.com for all of their support and assistance.

I wrote this book because many people try real hard but can’t seem to ever get to their pot of gold. So the first question is are they really trying or are their efforts simply perceived in their minds? Psychologically, failure to attain goals and whatever a person is seeking can play havoc in the human mind. I am not only going to address the topic of why people fail while others succeed; I am also going to teach you how to correct these failures and give you a step-by-step blueprint on how to succeed using the human mind to do it for you rather than against you.

In all of my human mind books as well as my eleven collogues’ books, I always include Chapter 1 Laying a Proper Foundation which is an actual human mind blueprint on how your mind works for you or against you and how the mind affects your actions/behaviors/conducts.  But more importantly, it teaches you not only why you do the things you do but why others do the things that they do and hence; why you and others fail as well as succeed so pay very close attention to Chapter 1.

Once you thoroughly learn Chapter 1, everything else I will be teaching you will quickly fall into place. And this is a book that you will need to reread multiple times in order to get everything firmly implanted in your mind. So don’t rush through the material!! Work at your own pace but work slowly and methodically.

Furthermore, if you get stuck on any particular chapter or topic, please don’t despair.  Simply write to me: treatpreston@epubwealth.com and I will come to your rescue and explain whatever it is you are stuck on until you understand it.  This book is designed to help you so getting stuck is not good and getting pass the stuck spots is essential so don’t be shy and write to me.  All correspondence is confidential so you can rest assured that your privacy is protected.

The title to this Introduction is The Herd Mentality. Herd Mentality is basically the concept of people going along with the most popular belief of any given subject simply because a person doesn’t want to appear odd or left out in the way they think or believe.

Here are two brief articles from Wikipedia that explains Herd Mentality. I have given the URLs of the articles so you can go and get the proper citations:

Herd mentality, or mob mentality, describes how people are influenced by their peers to adopt certain behaviors, follow trends, and/or purchase items. Examples of the herd mentality include stock market trends, superstition, home décor, etc. Social psychologists study the related topics of group intelligence, crowd wisdom, and decentralized decision making.

    History

Herd mentality and herd behavior have been prevalent descriptors for human behavior since people began to form tribes, migrate in groups, and perform cooperative marketing and agricultural functions. The idea of a group mind or mob behavior was first put forward by 19th-century French social psychologists Gabriel Tarde and Gustave Le Bon. Herd behavior in human societies has also been studied by Sigmund Freud and Wilfred Trotter, whose book Herd Instincts in Peace and War is a classic in the field of social psychology. Sociologist and Economist Thorstein Veblen's Theory of the Leisure Class illustrates how individuals imitate other group members of higher social status in their consumer behavior. More recently, Malcolm Gladwell in The Tipping Point examines how cultural, social, and economic factors converge to create trends in consumer behavior. In 2004, the New Yorker's financial columnist James Suroweicki published The Wisdom of Crowds.

21st-century academic fields such as marketing and behavioral finance attempt to identify and predict the rational and irrational behavior of investors. (See the work of Daniel Kahneman, Robert Shiller, Vernon L. Smith, and Amos Tversky.) Driven by emotional reactions such as greed and fear, investors can be seen to join in frantic purchasing and sales of stocks, creating bubbles and crashes.

    Herd Behavior

    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herd_behavior

Herd behavior describes how individuals in a group can act together without planned direction. The term pertains to the behavior of animals in herds, flocks, schools, demonstrations, riots and general strikes,[1] sporting events, religious gatherings, episodes of mob violence and everyday decision-making, judgment and opinion-forming.

Raafat, Chater and Frith proposed an integrated approach to herding, describing two key issues, the mechanisms of transmission of thoughts or behavior between individuals and the patterns of connections between them. [2] They suggested that bringing together diverse theoretical approaches of herding behavior illuminates the applicability of the concept to many domains, ranging from cognitive neuroscience [3] to economics.

A group of animals fleeing from a predator shows the nature of herd behavior. In 1971, in the oft cited article Geometry For The Selfish Herd, evolutionary biologist W. D. Hamilton asserted that each individual group member reduces the danger to itself by moving as close as possible to the center of the fleeing group. Thus the herd appears as a unit in moving together, but its function emerges from the uncoordinated behavior of self-serving individuals. [4]

    Symmetry-breaking

Asymmetric aggregation of animals under panic conditions has been observed in many species, including humans, mice, and ants. [5] Theoretical models have demonstrated symmetry-breaking similar to observations in empirical studies. For example, when panicked individuals are confined to a room with two equal and equidistant exits, a majority
