Chapter 1
Mother’s Gift
Looking back, I see that when I first met the rice farmer I didn’t know what I know now, that rice is one of Nature’s greatest gifts. Over time, I have come to learn of its magic. At its core, there is a flow, an interchange; a bestowing that enriches the daily lives of billions of people. Take a moment and reflect on the magnitude of this generosity. It is beyond comprehension!
She Sends Her Rice Out Of Love
Son, come on over and sit,
motioned the rice farmer.
"I have something important to say to you.
Ask your sister to come as well.
Both children quickly sat at their father’s feet.
My story is your story,
he said gesturing to us all.
These few words were the start of what would become a lifelong adventure.
What do you see when you look out there?
asked the rice farmer, pointing to the lush green terraces.
Lucky Rice,
came the reply quick as a flash.
The daughter knowing I knew very little of their ways, looked over to me and said; Lucky Rice is the last mouthful of rice on your plate. When eaten with appreciation it brings good luck.
Listen,
the rice farmer whispered. He lent forward as if to tell us something that should remain private a message only for the family.
He wasn’t a big man but his presence commanded a gentle authority. As he was gathering his thoughts, I had the feeling that this was going to be important.
Mister Tim,
(as I was affectionately known).
Yes,
I nodded.
The most important thing is, we work the land. We administer the farm. But the land belongs to the gods. We are very fortunate as the gods do most of the work.
The children giggled when they heard their father talk. They had heard this story before.
"In this field we have the helping hand of Mother. She gives us Her sunshine. She delivers the rains. The mud gives up Her nourishment. These are Her gifts.
"This is how we grow Lucky Rice with help from Mother.
"We do our job and She does Her job. We all work together. Must work together. Not separate.
"Make no mistake, we are happy to work hard. It is our privilege. Together our work in these rice fields feeds many people.
Maybe even the president,
said the rice farmer with a proud smile on his face.
Nature does Her best. We do our best. And the president does his best to help millions of people
.
As the rice farmer spoke the sun was beginning to set. A red and orange glow was flooding into the room. I pushed back into my chair. The rice farmer went on.
Knowing our rice gives people new energy for better life makes us?
he gestured to his children.
Very happy!
they shouted in unison, looking across to me and beaming with
