      Introduction

      I am the way into the doleful city.  I am the way into eternal grief.  I am the way to a forsaken race.  Justice it was that moved my great creator; divine omnipotence created me and highest wisdom joined with primal love.  Before me nothing but eternal things were made and I shall last eternally.  Abandon every hope, all you who enter.

      -The inscription above the gate to hell-

      A Grandmother in Tears was the name I was going to assign this book. 

      The video showing Karen Klein, a 68-year-old grandmother and bus monitor in upstate New York, being relentlessly tormented by a group of young boys attracted an outraged America by the thousands to YouTube.

      I changed the title of this book because I believe the problem is deeper that what the sound bites say.

      What is happening to our children today echoes in every corner of American society.

      At the same time this story broke, Jerry Sandusky was found guilty on 45-counts of terrorizing the poorest and most vulnerable of Pennsylvania's youth; of abusing his fame as a former Penn State defensive coordinator; and of conducting a charade of charitable work to supposedly help children.

      On one hand the children are perpetrators; on the other hand they are victims.

      What is happening to our children? 

      What is happening to our America?

      In the case of Karen Klein, they hurled profanities. One young boy asked for her address because he said he wanted to go urinate on her door.

      Others were more explicit in their taunts.

      One young boy told her that she doesn’t have a family because they all killed themselves because they didn’t want to be near you, which was particularly cruel since Karen Klein’s eldest son committed suicide.

      The taunting went on for over 10-minutes and when it was over a very shocked America sat back in bewilderment.  Americans commented swiftly!  Questions began flying, ‘Where are these boys parents?  How were they raised?  Why were these boys allowed to ramble on hurling their insults?  Where was the bus driver? 

      Many questions but few answers!  Many shocked voices added to the cacophony of outrage and
