Wikipedia says that: an outline is a type of hierarchical list arranged in levels using indents. An outline is a tree structure, designed to graphically convey the subjects' connectedness, showing the parent–offspring relationships between topics and their subtopics.
Thus, outlines are topic lists that organize and map the layout of a document; they show the hierarchical relationships or logical ordering of subject topics as the information is developed and presented in the final document.
The outlines in this book will help a project manager to quickly assess a project’s information needs and determine which documents are appropriate for the project. The outlines will assist the project manager to organize the relevant information as it is committed to paper and ultimately shared with the project team and stakeholders.
Outlines are available for the documents used on most projects and are organized by lifecycle phase. The outlines may be used with projects of all sizes; for smaller projects, it may be appropriate to omit some sections. For larger or unique projects, feel free to add or rearrange sections as needed.
