Special Prayers for All Purposes - Rev. (Dr.) Gabriel Oluwasegun

    world.

SECTION ONE: THE IMPORTANCE OF PRAYER

    WHAT IS PRAYER?

The Webster Dictionary defines prayer as the act of asking for favor with earnestness, a solemn petition, supplication, an entreaty, etc. Prayer is worship addressed to the Father in the name of Jesus Christ, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. It is asking and receiving from God. It is fellowshipping with the Father.

Prayer is the process whereby a person tells God all what is happening to him or her and God makes known to him or her what to do about the situation. (Jer. 29:12-13).

Prayer is not monologue, but a dialogue, i.e. God’s voice in response to mine, in the most essential part. Prayer as an offering up of our desires to God for all things lawful and needful, with humble confidence that we may obtain them through the mediation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Prayer is the most powerful weapon we have. Prayer is the greatest force known to man and in many cases the most unused power that man had available to him. It is the invisible tool which yields itself in the visible world. Prayer moves the hands that move the world. It is the most powerful weapon we have as a Christian.

Prayer is the place of power, prayer produces power, and prayer is the most powerful tool God has even given to us to prepare the way for Jesus’ return. It is the mightiest force that man has available to change the world. It is the only power that can accomplish His eternal purposes on planet Earth. We can rejoice in our weakness when we are trusting in Christ’s power. There are unlimited solutions to problems of life in Mount Zion. When we put our cares in God’s hands, He put His peace in our heart.

Prayer is like soap, it will not work unless it is applied, it is the umpire for knowing the well of God. True prayer is the Spirit of God working through the heart of the believer. Prayers enable us to be channels through which God’s energy and power flow. The best plan begins and ends with God, therefore if you expect specific answers, be specific in your prayers. I have learned that no one is borne a prayer hero. They are shaped and refined on the practice field of life. Prayer should be offered in Faith and in the name of Jesus Christ. Prayer should never be an excuse for inaction. Most prayers are only going to be answered when you attach action to them.

Worry is a substitute for prayer, worry centers on self, prayer centers on God. The Bible says: Therefore I say unto you what things so ever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. (Mk. 11:24).

We pray in order to get answers for our desires, solutions to our problems and to have our needs met. Through prayer, we offer our needs or desires to God. In our prayers, we must have a desire, but God will only give us those desires that are necessary and lawful. If we are praying for things, which are not needful and lawful for us, God may not answer us, because such things may destroy us spiritually or physically. Therefore, we should not make requests that will satisfy our lustful and fleshly desires.

Prayer is like a truck which is driven empty to a warehouse and it is being driven back from the warehouse, fully loaded with different kinds of goods items.

Prayer is the ‘living’Word of God in your mouth. Prayer is faith, spoken forth from your mouth (Heb. 11:6), i.e. you hold His Word up to Him. In your prayer your God sees Himself in His Word in your mouth, (Jer 1:8-9). God’s Word is our contact with Him, we put Him in remembrance of His word (Isa 43:26), when we pray scriptural prayers to Him. The Word does not return to us void (Isa 55:11). God instructs us to call Him and He will answer and deliver us and show us mighty things (Jer. 33:3, Ps 50:15). It takes courage to pray, and God moves as we pray in faith to Him. He tells us to come boldly to the throne of grace and obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need (Heb. 4:16). You do this in the place of prayer.

Prayer must be the foundation of every Christian endeavor. Every failure in life is a prayer failure. Prayerful preparation usually prevents poorful performance. Beloved, if you are too lazy to pray, then you are too lazy to walk in victory, if you are too busy to pray, then you are too busy to win. The prayer armor is for every believer to put on and walk in it (Eph. 6:12 - 18). God desires that we know how to pray, for the prayer of the upright is His delight (Prov. 15:8). We are to pray to the Father, in the name of Jesus, through the Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 13:14).

Using God’s Word on purpose, specifically, in prayer is a means of prayer, and it is a most effective and accurate means. Jesus said; The words (truths) that I have been speaking to you are Spirit and life (Jn. 6:63 Amp).

Prayer does not cause faith to work, but faith causes prayer to work. Therefore don’t allow the problem of doubt to influence you during prayer. This may mean doubting the integrity of the Word of God and His ability to stand behind the promises of His statements of fact in His Word.

We expect His divine intervention when we choose not to look at the things that are seen, but at the things that are not seen, for things that are seen are subject to change.

Prayers, based upon faith in God’s Word, rise above the senses, contacts the author of the Word, and sets His Spiritual laws into motion.

In time past, God has answered prayer for every conceivable need of His people, and under every imaginable circumstance, whether it was deliverance from sickness, a miracle supply, preservation from danger, divine guidance, saving one from dying of thirst, or for needed wisdom in ruling a kingdom - no matter what the need was God supplied it in answer to believing prayers. Let us consider same of God’s mighty answers to prayers in time past, as contained in the Bible. In his old age, Abraham desired a child of his wife, Sarah. God miraculously strengthened Sarah’s womb so that she could bear him a son

    (Gen. 21:2).

Jacob, the grandson of Abraham, sought adventure, but later became a Prince with God. Knowing his brother Esau was riding towards him with an army, seeking vengeance, he wrestled with God during a night of prayer. Jacob prevailed with God, so God prevailed over Esau on his behalf. (Gen. 32:33).

Gideon hesitated to perform the task God had given to him to do. Wanting to be sure, he was in God’s will, he asked God to make it clear. For a sign, on the first night he asked that the fleece would be wet and the ground dry. It was so. On the next night, he asked that the ground should be wet and the fleece dry.

God answered his prayer, with the assurance, that he was in God’s will. Gideon won a victory that resulted in the liberation of his nation from a cruel oppressor (Judges 6:36 - 40).

Samson achieved a great victory over the Philistines, but afterwards was very thirsty. He called on the Lord for help. Water came out of a hollow place in the jaw bone which Samson had used in battle (Judges 15:18-19).

Solomon found himself king over the greatest empire on earth, but realized he was only a child in understanding. He prayed that God would give him the necessary wisdom to discharge his great responsibility. God made him the wisest man of his generation.

Jerusalem was invaded by a superior force of the Assyrians who had been invariably successful in all their previous battles. Hezekiah’s troops were no match for this great army. So Hezekiah prayed, and that night an angel of the Lord struck the invading host. By the following morning 185,000 men lay dead (II Kg. 19:15-35).

Jabez was distressed by the wickedness of his day. He cried out to God, Enlarge my territory, that your hand would be with me, and that you would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain! (I Chron. 4:10). God granted him what he requested!

Jonah, the self-willed Prophet, was thrown into the sea and swallowed by a big fish. After Jonah repented of his disobedience, God caused the fish to vomit him out on dry land, and his life was spared (Jona.1)

While Elijah was staying with the Widow, her son grew ill and died. Elijah prayed and asked the Lord to restore life to the child. Never before had life been returned to anybody who had died. There was then no precedent for raising of the dead. Yet the prayer of Elijah caused the dead boy to revive (I Kg.17:20-23).

Daniel prayed for the restoration of Jerusalem, which had been lying in ashes since the day of Nebuchadnezzar’s invasion. The faithful Prophet lived to see King Cyrus made a decree permitting all Jews who would want to return and rebuild the city of Jerusalem. (Dan. 9).

Habakkuk prayed for revival saying, "Revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy" (Hab. 3:2). His prayer was answered with perhaps the greatest and the last revival that occurred in the history of the kingdom of Judah (II Kg.23:21- 25).

Peter was cast into prison with orders for his impending execution. But the Church prayed without ceasing for his release, and an angel of the Lord visited the prison and led Peter to safety (Acts 12:3-11).

Jesus said, Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks, it will be opened (Matt. 7:7-8).

What does this mean? It means there is an invisible power with us, able to work out solutions to every problem, anticipate every need, and supply whatever may be required a power so great that it can move mountains of problems of life, if need be.

Does this sound too good to be true? As God is true, so is His promise. Your Prayers can be answered too if you will take time to learn the secret. In I Timothy 2:1 you are admonished and urged that you make petitions, prayers, intercessions and thanksgiving on behalf of all men. Pray take you must continue to travel until God gives you the ‘Amen’. Pray! Take time to pray if you are too busy to pray, you are too busy to increase. No prayer, no increase, much prayer, much increase

    i.      Why we should pray

    (1) God insistently command it in the Bible:

And He spoke a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint (Lk. 18:1 KJV). Pray without ceasing (I Thes. 5:17 KJV).

    (2) Prayer is God’s appointed way to get things from Him.

Ask and it shall be given unto you, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you (Mt. 7:7 KJV).

Ye lust, and have not, ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain; ye fight and war; yet ye have not, because ye ask not (James 4:2 KJV).

    (3) Prayer is God’s way for us to have fullness of joy.

Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name; ask and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full (Jn 16:24 KJV).

    (4) Prayer is the way out of all troubles, the cure for all worry and anxious care.

Casting all your care upon him; for He careth for you (1 Peter 5:7 KJV).

    (5) Prayer is the only way to have the power of the Holy Spirit for God’s work.

Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized and praying, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon Him…(Lk. 3: 21 - 22 KJV) See also Acts 1: 13 - 14,2:11.

    (6) Prayer is necessary because whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be delivered. And call upon me in the day of trouble I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me (Ps. 50:15 KJV).

    (7) Christians are engaged in a continues spiritual warfare, and prayer is one of the resources for overcoming and ensuring victory.(Eph. 6:18)

    (8) Prayer helps us to maintain fruitful and continues fellowship with God. (Ps. 51:1-19; Jn. 2:1-10; I Jn. 1:6-9)

    (9) Prayer helps us not to fall into temptations (Matt. 26:14a)

    (10) When Christians are very prayerful, they will radiate the glory, authority and majesty of God. (Lk. 9:29-36).

    (11) Prayerfulness. Be prayerful and increase in life.
