About this ebook

Clan: Season 2, Episode 2. Calum’s Voyage

A Bitesize 1 hour Read.

With Cumberland’s army hunting down every Scotsman suspected of being involved in the failed rebellion, Calum Maclean and Big John Mackintosh have to flee the Highlands.

They secure passage on a mechantman heading for America. A merchantman full of deportees sold into indentured slavery by the English. Men and women crammed like cattle on the small ship. Scottish men and women.

Calum swears he will not interfere. But as always, Fate has other plans.

The voyage to America will take 6 weeks, but with 50 women on board, a mutinous crew and the every-present French Navy patrols, it may well be an eternity.

    Calum’s Voyage

Calum stood on the dock and watched the lines of men scurrying back and forth along the gangplank, loading stores and cargo onto the grubby little ship. This was going to be his home for the next long weeks, along with John, who was probably the world’s worst sailor and would complain the whole way across the Atlantic.

M’be he’d be lucky and the captain wouldn’t sell them passage. His common sense told him he’d probably sell anything to anybody for a price, and really that was fine because he and John needed to be out of Scotland before they got caught and hanged from a tree.

He saw John leave the ship at the end of the dock and trudge morosely down the gangplank, giving the vessel one last long, miserable look. He’d secured passage, that much was clear. Calum smiled a little at his friend’s miserable mood. The crossing to America was no fun, but neither was being hanged, and on balance, he’d take the crossing, and guessed so would John. Though he doubted he’d admit it.

John grunted as he approached and pointed over his shoulder with his thumb. Fifteen pounds! That thief charged us fifteen pounds.

The price of everything goes up when you’re on the run, Calum said with a shrug.

Aye, but that robber does na know we’re on the run.

Calum raised an eyebrow. He does now.

John looked at him questioningly, then at the ship. Because I wouldna agree to a price like that unless I was trying to get out of the country in a hurry.

    Aye, that’s about it.

    You shouldna sent me.

Calum shrugged. It would’ve been the same if I’d gone. A man in his line of work can smell a fugitive. And a chance to exploit him. He patted John on the back. And who can blame him? The wee man’s in business, is he not?

Aye, that kind of business. He pointed at the English soldiers pushing and beating Scottish prisoners up the gangplank and onto the ship.

A lot of good men have gone that route since the Bonnie Prince ran away.

And lassies. John nodded towards the line of ragged men and women. What’ll become of them?

They’ll be sold into indenture until they’ve paid their fine and their passage.

    That’ll be a life sentence.

Aye, Calum said, and looked away from the ship. For some it will be. He walked off down the dock.

    Where are you off to?

You bought us passage, Calum said over his shoulder. I’m away to find our quarters for the ocean voyage.

The quarters turned out to be a locker under the forecastle deck used to store the anchor when at sea.

Calum laughed and the crewman who’d shown them their accommodation stepped back quickly in case the man had gone mad.

This’ll be just fine, Calum said, and winked at John, who was staring at him with a bemused expression. At least we won’t be disturbed here. He leaned forward and looked down the hawsepipe at the hemp rope running down to
