    Chapter 1

Paige unbuckled her seat belt, and twisted her body to get a look at the wolf. The real question was whether Billy or Todd won the fight.  Her hands shook so much that she could barely release the catch on the seatbelt. Once free, she leaned down to grab the flashlight, her hands curling tightly around the metal and the light wobbling as she pointed it to the back of the pickup.

A pair of shiny eyes reflecting in the light lifted and she could see something drip from the mouth of the wolf that won the fight, probably the blood of the other wolf or saliva.

Her phone was on the floor of the passenger side.  Now that the pickup was stopped, she might as well call Jake.  He could save her. Then she thought of her dad's lifeless stare out of a face torn to shreds.  She swallowed bile. Tears filled her eyes.  She didn't know what to do.  If she called Jake, she could very well be his personal grim reaper, the bringer of his death.

Leaning across the console, she grabbed her phone off the floor, the back of her neck prickling.  She heard a thump and looked back, flashing her light through the rear window.  She closed her eyes and prayed that it wouldn't hit the door.  Slowly she pushed back to the driver's seat, phone in hand.

It was a sickening realization.  She was in the dead zone.  No cell coverage. Paige hit the steering wheel with a cry of frustration. Tears streamed down her cheeks. Jake's last message was the warning about Todd.  He must be on his way to the house. Jake would be looking for her.  She just had to hold on.

Paige turned off the flashlight. In the dark she curled up on the seat and waited. She just had to survive until morning. She sang a dozen Matchbox 20 songs staring through the windshield into the darkness, waiting for the wolves to do something.  It was so quiet. Too quiet.  But Paige kept singing in her head.

Paige dozed off and on, waking up to silence.  Once she raised the flashlight and waved it to the back of the cab.  If she had any doubt as to her own sanity, the proof was dead in the back, the light reflecting on the nose and mouth of the dead wolf.  She didn't dare leave the truck.

By first light, Paige's back was on fire and her neck ached.  Her bladder was full.  Once the sun was up, she scanned the forest, looking for animals.  She had to go to the bathroom so bad.

Finally, she unlocked the passenger side door and dashed out, pulling down her pants and releasing a stream on the side of the road.  As she zipped up, she looked in the back of the truck.  Now in the light, she could see the blood pooling along the tailgate.  At the wolf's neck, a huge chunk had been ripped out and the fur was matted.

Billy?  Paige inched her way toward the back.  No way would she touch that wolf.  She had to think.  If Todd and his group were werewolves, they'd still be a threat in the daylight.  She needed to get help.  If she could get to the top of
