A Devil In The Pines - Stephanie Armiger

    INTRODUCTION

The legend of the Jersey Devil has been alive and well in South Jersey since 1735, the year of the Devil’s birth. To this day people still wait and watch in the Pine Barrens on Halloween night hoping to get a glimpse of him running through the woods. Some say they saw him. Others say they heard him, but all of them say… he lives!

In this story the italicized words are all part of the earliest legend of the Jersey Devil. Now…read on, if you dare!

I recall an event that happened when I was a boy. A night so frightening, so eerie and so totally terrifying that the details stay locked in my mind as if it happened yesterday. I’m only telling you this story because to this day, I’m still not certain who, or where the Jersey Devil is; all I know is, that he is.

It was a dark, cold, damp autumn night back in ’58, the kind of a night that made you wish you were home in a warm safe house curled up in front of a cozy fire. My brother, my dad and I were coming home from a ball game the back way on old Route 563. My dad and his short cuts! I was hoping that it wasn’t going to be one of those nights that Dad got lost. Since Mom died we had always waited up until he got home. I can still hear him trying to explain to us why he didn’t get home til past 1:30 in the morning. It seemed that getting lost was always his excuse!

Bobby and I were sitting in the back seat curled up under a blanket. I was looking out the window.

Isn’t this the Pine Barrens, Dad? I asked.

Yeh, all this part of South Jersey is, he said.

Oooo, I teased as I poked Bobby’s ribs. Maybe the Pineys will get us.

What Pineys? Bobby wanted to know.

You know, those pointy eared people who live in the Pine Barrens and eat squirrels.

    We both burst out
