Nothing can ever prepare you for such life-changing news. I sat there stunned and frightened to death as the doctor rattled on about treatments, medication, and a very dismal diagnosis. It was permanent. It was incurable and terminal. And my quality of life would quickly start slipping away.
What was just as shocking to me as the diagnosis was how it was even possible. I was a pretty healthy person. I had always exercised regularly. I ate good foods. I didn’t smoke. There wasn’t any family history of multiple sclerosis (MS) that I could recall. I was only fifty-five years of age—a very active wife, mother, and grandmother. Sure, I wasn’t going to be training for the Olympic games anytime soon, but I certainly wasn’t old enough to be worrying about any major illnesses. Heck, I had the best years ahead of me, or so I thought. And yet here I was, in a cold and impersonal doctor’s office, listening to some stranger in a white coat tell me that my life was basically over. And to add insult to injury, just days before I had been at the beach enjoying a vacation with my family. Talk about a slap in the
