    Chapter One

Rwolf stood at the apex of an underground mountain made from crystallized fossils, while Rush and Everett explored the base of the small mountain. The subdued moss lighting gave the small mountain a kind of Halloweenish look, very spectral and foreboding, but the most scary part of it was the fact that it was all made from bones. Tons and tons of them.

I don't get it. Rush commented as he examined what could only be the digits of a humanoid creature in his hands. Why would all these people or whatever they were and animals and whatever the rest are decide to die here, to bury themselves in this small mountain...

Which is still growing. Everett noted, as he kicked at the corpse of a small rodent-like creature whose fur was rotting away to reveal its eye sockets.

It's funny, Rush. I have no clue how long we've been down here anymore since our watches blew up. Who would have figured the magnetics down here were so crazy.

    Can't always see the future.

Mate, it's the one thing we can see.

He gestured to all the bones around them. Ever since that Big One splattered the hopes and dreams of billions of people around the planet, we've been on a one way hay ride to death and destruction.

Don't be so positive, mate. Everett shot back. It could be worse.

Yeah. We could have ended up a snack for those buddies of Rowlf.

Rowlf! Rowlf called down to them, his antenna pointing towards them to indicate he had heard.

"Even the walls have ears!' Russ agreed.

    Too bad they're so stupid!

    Rowlf smhart!

Russ and Everett waved at him with good natured smiles on their faces.

Isn't it nice to have a pal that can take all the malicious stabs and jabs one can fork out.

Just remember Russ, he can also eat you for breakfast!

Rowlf shook his head vigorously. Twoo wough and twough!

Why is it that he always sees the positive side of things? Everett joked.

Rush looked up at Rowlf, who seemed quite at home on top the grisly pile. Just look at that guy, you'd think he had just scaled Mount Everest or something.

He's very simple. Everett pointed out. Much like prehistoric man must have been at one time.

Yeah. Before someone charged them taxes. Rush added with a smirk.

Everett laughed. Leave it up to you to find the bright side of darkness.

You're the hole digger, not me. Rush shot back. How do you read it?

Friggin' mystery, is what I read? What do you expect from me anyway? I got no professional equipment...unless you count this bone spear... He shook the spear he had chiseled from one of the massive bones with the help of a sharp rock over several days. And I can barely carry what I have anymore. He gestured to the moss clothing he had managed to sew together with strong weeds and pieces of bone.

His clothing was soft and comfortable, but a bit raw on the inside and always, always itched like crazy against his bare skin. Which was mostly all of it. The only thing he had left from the original expedition after their months below was his shoes, which he had rebuilt with the help of bones for the inside and hard, scaly leaves from these tough thorn trees that Rowlf had found for them.

Rowlf had none of their problems, of course, because he was butt naked, except for a rope about his middle for a rough bone knife and a kind of halter to carry his bone spear over his left shoulder so he could do a quick grab and throw if necessary.

All three of them had gone without much for the weeks since they had escaped Rowlf's home in Hell as they were lately beginning to describe their environment. And hell it seemed like these days as they were now passing through a vast series of chambers
