    The Night Chale Thayer Blew his Head off at the Punch Drunk Comedy Club

    Chale Thayer sprawled out naked in bed with Darla’s head resting on his chest. Sunlight beamed through a missing slat in the Venetian blinds and cast a luminous shaft swarming with dust motes like tiny planets cut adrift in a bright, chaotic universe. He blew a stream of smoke into the light and watched it twist and curl in serpentine spirals and whorls, like storm clouds, then dissipate and rise, and disappear.

    Darla snatched the cigarette from Chale’s fingers and took a long, slow drag. She held the smoke up to her mouth and exhaled, watching the paper burn away around the cherry. I wish we met when I was younger, she said. I was really something when I was younger. I mean, I was really beautiful. I really was.

    Chale took the cigarette back. What are you talking about? You get more beautiful every time I see you, kid.

    She shook her head. No I don’t. I've been in the city too long. It’s like I’m stained or something. I should have gotten out of here while I could, but it’s too late now. No matter how hard I scrub, I'll never get this goddamn city out of my face.
