    Born in rural northern Kentucky, Michael Capek was rescued from youthful shyness and academic failure by communing with nature and reading. Writing gave him a voice and an identity in his teen years and offered a path out of self-doubt and despair. An encounter with author Jesse Stuart in his first year at Cumberland College (Williamsburg, Kentucky) confirmed what he had sensed for years—that his own destiny lay in teaching and writing. Michael married his high school sweetheart, Terri Richardson, in 1969, and they spent a combined 58 years teaching in Kentucky's public schools. Michael retired from the classroom in 1996 to write full time. Today, he roams the same valleys he explored as a child, still finding peace and inspiration in nature, reading, and writing. Sharing those things with children—particularly his grandchildren—continues to be one of his greatest joys.

      THE UN-CIVIL WAR

      The Civil War was the worst war ever fought on American soil. Shooting started in April 1861. The fighting did not stop until April 1865. During that time, Americans fought one another in battle after bloody battle. When the war was over, billions of dollars worth of property had been damaged. Worse, at least 620,000 soldiers had died. Some historians believe that number may be closer to 750,000. And these numbers do not even count civilian deaths.

      How did the war get started? What made fellow citizens, neighbors, and even family members take different sides and start fighting one another? The Civil War had several causes. But the main issue, slavery, was present at the very beginning.

      Civil War battlefields were the scenes of many deadly fights between the North and the South.

      AMERICAN WAR DEATHS

      Revolutionary War (1775–1783): about 7,200 deaths

      World War I (1914–1918): about 116,500 deaths

      World War II (1939–1945): about 400,000 deaths

      Korean War and Vietnam War (1954–1975): about 94,500 deaths

      THE SLAVERY ISSUE

      In 1775 nearly 500,000 slaves lived in the North American colonies. By the early 1800s the number of slaves had grown to over 700,000. They were either newly captured Africans or the descendents of African slaves who were already here.
