    CHAPTER ONE-THE ORIGINS OF EFT

    Within minutes of meeting her, Laurie blew her nose and apologized for having remnants of a cold, which she said, had been lingering for a many days. Since we would be working together in close quarters for the next couple of weeks, I wanted her to be healthy. I had been using the Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) for only a few weeks and figured it might help her. So I told her what to say and what to do and within a couple minutes, much to her amazement, her sinuses were totally clear and her breathing was perfectly normal. She didn’t have to blow her nose again for at least as long as I was working with her.

    You would think she would be grateful for my help but she wasn't. The change happened so quickly and was so perfect and complete, she was spooked. Her sense of reality had been totally shaken and she spoke to me as little as possible all the time we worked together. She acted as if I was in league with the devil or from another planet. Hers was an unusually negative reaction. I usually get a more appreciative response when I teach EFT to people.

    The story above illustrates three important points. First, EFT often works well and quickly even if you don’t know all the ins and outs. Second, EFT can work so quickly, the person using it can’t always process the change because it’s unlike anything they’ve experienced before. Third, you don’t have to believe in anything for it to work. Laurie neither believed nor disbelieved because she had no idea what she was doing. She was just following my directions.

    That’s the beauty of EFT. It’s so simple to learn, easy to do and so effective, you can get amazing results right out of the gate. I’ve taken so many workshops and read so many books over the years and I’ve studied numerous healing and self-help techniques, many in the field of energy work. Nothing has produced the amazing and consistent results I’ve gotten with EFT.

    The Emotional Freedom Techniques is the reigning king, keystone and cornerstone in the new and growing field known as Energy Psychology. EP is a collective name for various techniques, therapies and processes that do what traditional psychotherapy purports to do and a whole lot more but in a fraction of the time, a fraction of the cost, without drugs and often with far better results.

    EFT is a simple five-step process to alleviate emotional and physical pain, discomfort, distress and occasionally disease. With very few exceptions, anybody can (and should) use it. It can be learned quickly without the need for extensive training. You can and will learn it from reading this book.

    EFT is totally safe and it has no unwanted side effects. If you can touch your face (or have someone touch it for you) you can do EFT. Even if you can’t touch your face, you can still do a modified version of EFT.

    The roots of EFT go back to the early 1980’s when Roger Callahan, a psychotherapist in California, had been reading up on acupuncture which was new to America at that time. From his studying, he understood life energy, called chi, flowed through the body along certain pathways known as meridians. He also understood certain meridians corresponded to specific internal organs. Diseases are a result of interruptions or imbalances of the flow of this energy in the meridians. Along the meridians are very specific points, each with their own significance and therapeutic function. These points are where an acupuncturist would insert needles.

    One of Callahan's patients, usually referred to as Mary, had fear of water so intense she wouldn’t go into a bathroom if more than a quarter inch of water was in the tub. As if that wasn't bad enough, Mary lived in California where many people have swimming pools are in their backyards. Mary certainly would never go to the beach.

    Mary had spent many fruitless years in therapy with a number of doctors. She had been seeing Dr. Callahan for a number or sessions without making any significant progress. During one session, she casually mentioned she had a stomach ache. Hoping to apply what he had read about acupuncture, Dr. Callahan reached over and tapped his finger right under her eye. Since this is the start of the stomach meridian he was figuring tapping on it might relieve the stomach ache. As soon as he tapped it, she told him it was gone. He thought she meant the stomach ache but she actually meant her fear of water. He didn’t believe her. To prove it, she went to a nearby pool and stuck her arm in the water conclusively proving she was over her fear. The session was over and she never had to go back. Her phobia was permanently gone.

    Callahan very quickly put two and two together and realized he had stumbled into a new way of treating people. He started tapping all his clients under the eye. He usually didn’t get such instant or startling results as he did with Mary but a very small percent of his clients did improve. Considering what he was doing, none of his clients should have gotten better at all so he was encouraged to continue his research. He started to see that emotional problems, as well as physical problems, might be a result of the interruption of the flow of chi energy in the meridians.

    He began experimenting by tapping additional meridian points on the face, chest and hands. His points tended to be where meridians started or ended. Callahan meticulously noted which points worked for which emotion and in what order they should be tapped to get the best results. While the body has hundreds of these meridian points, Callahan only used 14 points in various combinations. Not all emotions required all 14 points to be tapped. Also the order in which they were to be tapped was different for each emotion. The sequence in which the designated points were to be tapped was called an algorithm. After much research, he had had dozens of algorithms. He called his system of treatment, "Thought Field Therapy." (TFT)

    His book, The Five Minute Phobia Cure, explained part of TFT. To learn the entire system, you had to attend a weekend workshop for which he charged $10,000. Most of the people attending the workshops were psychotherapists willing to pay the steep price because TFT was doing more for patients than years of psychotherapy. TFT was truly healing people in a quick, reliable manner.

    One particular student attending one of his workshops was not a psychotherapist. This student, Gary Craig, had an engineering degree from Stanford. While he didn’t earn his living as an engineer, he still thought like one. He observed that his classmates seemed to be getting good results even if they tapped the points in the wrong order or used the wrong algorithm. Gary reasoned you could tap the points in any order you choose and still benefit. He also realized that tapping on unnecessary points was, at worst, harmless. He concluded that one tapping algorithm utilizing all 14 points in any order should work on whatever feeling or emotion one needed to treat so he devised one easy to remember, universal algorithm for treating everything. He called his system of tapping EFT, the Emotional Freedom Techniques. Since it was easier to learn and since Gary made EFT available to anyone at far more reasonable prices, EFT became more widely known and used than
