Once Upon a Boyfriend
Once upon a time . . . .
Stories like this are supposed to start like that, right? If something crazy or magical or just flat out unbelievable happens, you’ve got to start with Once Upon a Time. So there, I did it.
During lunch hour one day, I was walking through the gully near my school. Other kids were usually nearby, but not that day. Just as well since I didn’t spend a whole lot of time talking to them anyway. Sometimes my head hung low when I walked, which meant I could see all sorts of things on the ground. Usually it was beer bottles, cigarette packages and, ahem, used condoms that were scattered around the gully.
That day, though, I found a lamp.
It really looked like an antique tea kettle. But, when I took another look at it, I was sure it was a genie’s lamp. You know, the kind in fairy tale books? But, if it was a real lamp, why the heck would anyone throw it away? It was covered by a small patch of grass, so I bent down to pick it up and dusted it off.
Maybe it was a little small to be an antique tea kettle, but I bet it was real pretty back in its day. I rubbed it, just for fun, kind of like how you pull the trigger on an unloaded gun. Nothing’s gonna happen, right?
Except something did.
Smoke chugged out of the spout and lid, making me drop the lamp and jump back. I wanted to run, but I was frozen in place. All I could do was watch the smoke cloud grow and grow until I was totally sure I saw someone in the smoke, someone who’d slipped out of the lamp’s spout at the exact same time.
I coughed and I hacked, I hacked and I coughed until I waved a hand that cut through the smoke instead of clearing it away. Eventually, the smoke cleared a little on its own and I became absolutely, totally sure someone was there. It was a guy. A really cute guy. Maybe once the smoke cleared it would turn out that he wasn’t cute at all. Maybe he would be totally plain Jane, but for now . . . yeeeeowwww!
The smoke finally
