    Invasion

The big attacker raised his foot and pushed the watchman off his sword. The round little man sat down heavily as if he was really tired. But he was past tired, way past tired.

Anella gasped. Woe blinked hard and tried to reset his brain. The watchman was still dead, his blood running bright red down the dirty white steps. The crowd did what any bunch of citizens would do when a watchman is killed. They ran away. It was a melee of arms and elbows, but by any measure, it was a scramble to get away as quickly as possible.

We have to do something! Anella shouted.

Oh, right, said Woe with a shake of his head. I’ll run on over and capture them, shall I?

She glared at him. Don’t be a smart-mouth! She pointed again, in case he’d forgotten where the thugs were. Do that spell thing!

What spell thing? said Woe, then got it, and his face dropped. I can’t just do it! I only did it once, and that was when everybody was going to die. I can’t just—

But Anella was moving. She scampered down the six steps to the cobbled square and stopped and looked around urgently. But there was nobody military or even a bit brave. What she did see was a stall selling cast-off armour, swords, and… a long bow. She ducked in between the remaining people who’d been a bit slow running for it.

Arrows! she screamed at the stall-holder, who was presently warring with the urgent need to run away and the fear that someone would steal his junk.

    He looked at her blankly.

Arrows? shouted Anella. Do you have any?

He blinked slowly, twice, then pointed at a quiver leaning against the stall, and made no effort to stop her when she grabbed it and the bow. She hadn’t really thought it through, but her hands knew what was needed and snapped into action with a smooth efficiency that would have brought a smile to the face of Longfella Chip.

She drew the bow, saw the turbulence in the air caused by the sun’s heat and the fleeing crowd, and instinctively targeted the thug who had killed the watchman. She slipped into the harmony between the bow, the arrow and the hemp bowstring. They were fulfilling their destiny and were happy to be useful again.

The arrow zipped past the heads of the last few people fleeing the scene, curved up very slightly as the thermals rose from the hot cobbles, and sank deep into the killer’s chest. By the time he realised he was dead, another arrow was on its way. The thug holding Amara tried to pull her in
