    At first he thought he’d left the TV on. As August opened his eyes, he realized he was in the time machine and the sounds were coming from outside. Where was he? When was he?

    He dragged himself to a sitting position and glanced around. At least he’d managed to make it to the small bed instead of falling asleep at the controls. Wait, if he wasn’t at the controls, that meant he’d set the course and hadn’t stuck around to make corrections. He sat up straighter and grabbed his pounding head.

    The shouting outside was getting louder. August stumbled over an empty wine bottle on his way to the controls at the front of the ship. The panels over the windows were up, showing something dark and flat. He had to squint at it for a while until it dawned on him that it was a wall. He’d crashed into a building of some kind. No wonder there was shouting outside. And he probably hadn’t remembered to turn on the cloaking, either.

    Whoops.

    He went to the door and opened it, blinking in the glaring sunlight. The crowd gave a collective gasp. Squinting, he could make out weapons in most of their hands. Or maybe they were just farming tools. Well, he could hope. Just to be safe, he lifted his hands to show he was unarmed. Uh … I come in peace.

    He’s a god.

    No, he’s a Englishman in some strange new land ship.
