    About the Author

    Journey Into Darkness

Melanthe sat on one of the smooth stone ramps, wriggling her feet in the cool salty water. People passed behind her going to wherever they needed to be. Lumina was a busy place. The big festival was tonight.

The dome glowed three levels above her, intersected with platforms and stairs. Luminous and Landed peoples watched the water outside, and the many different types of fish gathering there. She could smell the change in the water at her feet. It smelled fishier.

She was the only one with no place to be. Well, her and a dozen others her age. Tonight was their last night in Lumina for a year.

Tomorrow, she and the others, would leave the domes and swim upwards to the surface of the sea. Then they would go separate directions. Wandering the World of the Enigmatic Pearl for an entire year. Most of them would be trying to decide what they wanted to do, where they wanted to live.

She hadn’t been given a choice. Just as her mother, Eleni was Queen, so would she be. After her year, she’d come back and live here, under the dome, beside the Pearl. And learn how to rule this world, how to care for its people.

The thought of having no choice weighed her down.

She wouldn’t make a good queen. How could she? Her body carried the same weakness that had killed her father.

Melanthe was at the beginning of adulthood and she should be filled with energy and vitality. Others, her age, had enough life in them to do everything they wanted. She could barely make it through part of a sleep cycle before she dropped from exhaustion.

And the sickness would only get worse.

    There was no cure.

Melanthe felt unsure how she’d survive the next year. She hated having to explain herself to those who didn’t know her.

She felt a jab in her back and looked up. Kira and Tasha stood behind her.

Come on lazy, said Kira. Come with us to soak in the baths. It will be the last chance we can do it for a year.

Melanthe stood, smiling. She would miss her friends with their warm embraces and laughter.

As they crossed one of the walkways, she watched the ghost fish circling beneath them. The fishes’ transparent skin showed the bones beneath. They led very long lives, longer than most other beings. Ghost fish looked ancient and were revered.

They were gathering for the ceremony.

The city was crowded, filled with strangers.

Landed and Luminous had come to participate in the festival. Partly because of her. It wasn’t every season a future Queen went on her Wandering. People stared at her.

One of them, a green Luminous with golden eyes stood near a food area. His arms were crossed and he looked disapproving somehow. He was shorter than most, but more muscular. Melanthe realized she was staring at him and looked away. As she passed him, following Kira and Tasha, she met his eyes. And shivered.

There was a hardness, a coldness there, that she’d rarely seen in anyone. The World of the Engimatic Pearl was a peaceful place, although the seas were dangerous and filled with predators.

This man had seen too much death.

Inside the baths steam rose, making even the air damp and heavy. She felt the heat of it deep in her lungs. Fragrant herbs from the land above had been added to the water. She recognized mint, rosemary, passwort, lavender and rose. They filled her with pleasure.

Melanthe removed her jewelry and put it on the common table. She unwrapped the paassa from her waist and dropped it in the container of fabrics to be washed.

Then she walked through the waterfall to rinse herself off and into the crowded pool. Kira and Tasha were already in the water. Melanthe found a side bench near them and sat, pretending to rub her feet. Massaging the herbs and oils into her skin.

So, this is your Wandering aeon, said the woman sitting beside her. The woman’s face was wrinkled and sagging. She must be very old. A Luminous, but a stranger to Melanthe."

    Yes, how did you know?

    "You
