    Chapter One

Henry and Grace Keenan had an uneventful evening watching television. Henry had retired from his position as an engineer two years ago and his wife, a retail assistant, just a few months after him. They were a devoted couple, having been married for nearly 40 years and in all that time he could count on one hand the many times they had argued. What he failed to remember, was the bad years when he came home drunk every night but he had now been sober for over 10 years and had no real memories of any drunken arguments but there were many as his wife often reminded him.

They had two children both daughters. Their eldest daughter Marie married seven years ago and emigrated to Australia soon after, with her husband Michael. They now had two daughters of their own, Patricia and Monica and Henry and Grace had saved up hard over the years to be able to visit them this coming summer. Henry was rather scared of spending their savings, now that they were both retired but his wife had already bought their plane tickets, so there wasn’t much he could do about it now.

Their youngest daughter Melanie was in her last year at high school and had already secured a place at university, after the summer. She was going to follow her big sister’s footsteps and become a primary school teacher and when she was qualified, she too wanted to put her roots down in Melbourne beside her sister.

With a heavy heart Henry had listened to her plans and had tried on more than one occasion to dissuade her but her mind was made up. With their forthcoming summer holiday to Melbourne, he hoped that once she had seen the country, she would change her mind but he knew in his heart that this scenario was just wishful thinking. His wife, Grace, although sad with the news, had told him that this was the best thing for their daughter and was pleased at her decision to start a new life in a far-off land. He completely disagreed with her opinion on the matter. Losing one daughter was bad enough but to lose his youngest, was more than he could bear. Nevertheless, he knew that there wasn’t much to be done about it and hoped that she would somehow change her mind. He consoled himself with the fact that she had four years at university before that fateful day would arrive.

I’m off to bed love. Grace told him. I’ll be up in a minute.’ he replied, scanning through the local newspaper again before bed. His wife saw him screwing up his eyes. I’m going to make an appointment for you at the opticians. Now don’t argue. You’re as blind as a bat." she told him. He didn’t reply and simply shrugged his shoulders, as he knew she was right. His eyesight had deteriorated over the last few years and it was now time to declare himself an old man that needed help with his eyesight. He had always prided himself in his 20:20 vision but he had to concede that old age catches up with everyone so wearing glasses was the next evolution in his journey through life.

An hour later he jumped into bed. He wondered where all the years had gone. He was once a young man starting out in life and now he was
