This paper will also show at the rate America is going without Godly men and women and the church standing up for Christ. What America will look like in ten years?

      This thesis is dedicated to everyone who has helped me and guided me through the trials and troubles of creating this paper. In particular my wife and kids who stood by me throughout this process. They never complained or made any negative remarks of all the hours that was put in for research and typing. I would like to thank Bethany Divinity College and Seminary in Dothan Alabama even after I graduated I have continued to stay in touch with them and they have been a blessing in my ministry and have encouraged me to keep on going and looking to the cross. A special thanks to my father-in law Rich Dilling who is a pastor and has guided me and given me great advice in the ministry and has encouraged me and given me opportunities to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ. To all the pastor’s I have been blessed to work under and to have learned so much from. Tom Whitehouse (Texas), Joe Sizemore (Alabama), Roger Smith (Mississippi) and Cecil Fuller (Arkansas). These men guided me from youth pastor to Senior Pastor. I also want to give acknowledgment to all my pastor friends who I love like brothers and that being evangelist Ed Held who has always encouraged me and prayed for my ministry, alongside The Crusaders ministry. Children’s pastor Brian Bowers who has always called and checked on me, prayed with me, and keeps encouraging me. When I felt like giving up Brian was there to help me keep going. Finally I would love to acknowledge my parents Mike and Scottie Watts who have always believed in me and have helped financially and just by being there. I know I have failed to mention some but you know who you are and I’m forever grateful for everyone that God has placed in my life.

      ABSTRACT

      Chapter 1: A Nation Born

      July 4th 1776 a day a nation was born. After months and many debates educated men finally came together in one accord to sign documents to make the nation official. It had taken many years for this nation to get to this point. For years it was known as the American colonies and it was just thirteen colonies and it was playing by the British rules. People were paying high taxes, answering to the King and facing religious persecution. Before this date this nation had been facing religious persecution for years. Back in 1534, England broke ties with the Roman Catholic Church. Protestant Reformers saw this as an opportunity to bring true reform to the church in England. As the years went on these became known as the Puritans because they wanted to purify the Church of England and of their Catholic traditions.

      These Puritans wanted to worship freely and did not won’t to be told how to worship so they left and went to Holland for many years. As time went on they wanted to do what God’s word teaches and that is "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (Matthew 28:19). They loaded up on a boat and headed east to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Now this journey was not easy many lives were lost because of the weather, sickness and food. Those Reformers saw it a mission to tell others about Jesus and because of their sacrifice this nation before it became a nation already had Jesus here long before the colonies fought to start a nation.

      Churches were in the colonies for hundreds of years and seminaries were started. Christ indeed was relevant. So if America traces its history back long before the founding fathers it can clearly see that America was a Christian nation. Long before the America Revolution Christ was making an impact in the nation. The view of Christ back in the early centuries had different views just as America does today. You had folks that were going through the motions just attending church and it was dryness. You had others that wanted to experience more intimacy with God and not just go through the motions. In the early century it was wrong to take a stand against the church because they made it feel like they knew more than the believer. When the gospel of Jesus Christ was preached away from the churches then the Holy Spirit started to move across the land and people started getting saved and revival was happing all across the land.

      When this Great Awaking started to take place it showed that people wanted religious freedom. The people wanted to worship freely without being told how to do it or when to do it. This awaking helped the colonists see that religious freedom laid with them not the church. The great awaking pushed individual religious experience over established church doctrine, thereby decreasing the importance and weight of the clergy and the church in many instances. New denominations also arose and grew in numbers as a result of the emphasis on individual faith and salvation. Finally it unified the American colonies as it spread through numerous preachers which started revivals. This unification was greater than had ever been achieved previously in the colonies.

      It has been said that Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield were the greatest preachers of that time and their messages still speak today. As you look at these quotes from Edwards and Whitfield you can clearly see that The Holy Spirit was moving and speaking through them. He that has doctrinal knowledge and speculation only, without affection, never is engaged in the business of religion. ― (Jonathan Edwards) Resolution One: I will live for God. Resolution Two: If no one else does, I still will. ― (Jonathan Edwards) Who will deny that true religion consists, in a great measure, in vigorous and lively acting’s of the inclination and will of the soul, or the fervent exercises of the heart? That religion which God requires, and will accept, does not consist in weak, dull, and lifeless, wishes, raising us but a little above a state of indifference. ― (Jonathan Edwards) Congregations are lifeless because dead men preach to them. ― (George Whitefield) You may have orthodox heads, and yet you may have the devil in your hearts. ― (George Whitefield) I believe this last quote from Whitefield shows that if the people didn’t make a stand for Christ and kept getting pushed around that trouble was coming. O poor New England! There is a deep laid plot against your civil and religious liberties, and they will be lost. Your golden days are at an end. You have nothing but trouble before you. . . . Your liberties will be lost. ― (George Whitefield)

      I’m sure Edwards and Whitefield did not know the important part they were playing in the founding of a nation and finally leaving British rule. I’m sure there main goal was to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and was thinking about the eternal things instead of the present world. These two men made a stand for Christ and help change a nation to be able to worship freely without being forced too. So religious freedom was now just getting started and The British was not liking
