    Anny's - Alex R Casey

    Chapter 1

    Cabin

A woman packs an old suitcase, and a large full black plastic bag, her son has a backpack, and also carries a black plastic bag in his arms. They have walked quite far, and they are both getting very tired. Randy her twelve old son asks, Mom why can't we just go home, I am hungry and tired. Anny answers, Randy we can't go back home, we couldn't pay the rent, and the owner has locked the doors. Randy asks, Didn't dad pay the rent? Anny hesitates to find the right words, then answers, Your Father took the truck, and left, he won't be back, we must find a place of our own. All the rentals they looked at near the city were too expensive, and now they have gone to the outer city limits, where there are trailers and small cabins. They have inquired at two or three places; there is nothing to rent, or too expensive. This is there last hope for today. They spot a row of small run down cabins, and make there way over to the larger cabin; possibly where the owner lives. They arrive at the cabin, and knock on the door, and wait. Soon the door opens, and a man in a dark blue checked shirt steps into the doorway. Anny inquires, Is there a cabin available. The man looks at the two standing before him, and answers, Yes cabin one is available. He says, It is a two bedroom cabin; it has just been vacated, and not been cleaned. He asks, Do you want to see it? Anny replies, No that won't be necessary, and I can clean it She stands before the owner of the cabin with a hopeful heart, her hands tremble as she listens. He states, The rent is two hundred dollars a month, payable in advance. The electricity is included, but be careful that you don't plug in any thing too big into the receptacle, or you will blow the fuse. There is running water, a shower, but no inside toilet. He waits for any reply, there is none, so he continues talking, and there is an outhouse out the back which is shared by the next cabin, a Mrs, Macintosh. I think you will find her easy to get along with even though she can be a bit nosey at times. You can keep the furniture and all that was left behind by the last tenant; a Russian woman. She died and I don't know if she had any family, so I am going to take everything that is left in the cabin to the dump. He pause, then continues, I don't know much about the people who live in the cabins. I don't ask questions, and try to mind my own business. I would ask you to keep an eye on your son, as the stream at the end of the property can be very swift at times, and especially dangerous in the winter when it partly freezes over. He pauses to see there any questions relating to the cabin, and sees that there is none, so he continues. Seeing as there is only two days left to the end of the month I will not charge you for the last two days; just pay me the two hundred. Anny manages to relax a bit, now that she is assured of a place to live in. She is happy that she has enough money to make the first months rent. A small smile appears from behind her tense face, as she hands him the money, Thank you for your generosity. Max answers, By the way my name is Maxwell Bennett, people just call me Max. I live in this cabin, and I do all the maintenance.

Max reaches inside the room to a board on the wall with many keys, and retrieves one.

Here is the key for cabin one, if you need anything, you know where to find me.
