About this ebook

A century after humankind lost a futile war to the immortal vampires, werewolves, and elves who rule the world, the young and handsome John lives in the castle of the legendary vampire Belle Helène the Conqueror, as a pampered pet and sexual servant to Helène's two sisters.

In part two of this five-part series, John, having regained the trust of the other humans in Lady Helène's castle, learns of a secret that could change everything in humanity's planned rebellion against the immortal Ladies and Lords who rule over them. But after a horrifying encounter leaves him badly wounded, the only one he can turn to for help is the leader of his enemies: Helène.

    Ruthless Truths

Light, flaring across his eyes, lancing through his head like a needle. He cried out and tried to turn away, but that movement awakened a thousand rips and aches in his flesh. The agony made his stomach heave, but nothing was left in him to come up.

Nightmare images, as from a fever dream: voices too loud, laughs too sinister. The faces of his parents, drawn and tired, their eyes full of dull condemnation. But then no, not his father but Elden, another attendant, and not his mother but—Abigail? Weeping?

The world slipped from his reach, over and over, moments of waking merging with uneasy dreams—and all throughout, a background symphony of pain, in every inch of his body. He squirmed restlessly, unable to find a comfortable position.

Finally, the crawling in his skin and the heat rising from him eased. He opened his eyes to find himself in his room, in twilight darkness, with the door cracked open. Voices drifted in.

    —ever wake up?

    —remember Annalisa?

—Lady Helène must have been saving up, all this time—

    —waiting for her moment—

John cleared his throat, weakly, and the voices stopped. The door opened wider.

    A concerned face peered in.

Maida? John managed, then fell into a coughing fit that felt like it would shatter his ribs.

Maida hurried in and grabbed a wooden cup from the table beside John’s bed, holding it to his lips and trickling stale water into his mouth. He sucked it down greedily.

Maida’s voice, when she spoke, wavered. You know us, then, John?

He squinted up at her woozily. Why wouldn’t I?

You’ve been sick, my lad. The blood fever—well. You’re on the mend now, and that’s what matters.

He nodded, even that small movement an effort. His eyes started closing.

Oh, no, you don’t, not yet, Maida said, waving to someone through the doorway. You don’t sleep again till we get some strong beef broth into you. A moment later, she held a warm pottery mug to his mouth.
