Ten Minute Tarot - Greg Strandberg

    Introduction

If you’re buying this book it means you want to make Tarot easy. I’ve got good news for you: it can be done!

This book gives you more than 40 different spreads and explains all 78 cards in the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck. You’ll get a picture of each spread, a detailed explanation of how to use it, and an easy to use table of contents that makes finding the card you need fast. You’ll be learning about your past, present, and future in ten minutes or less!

Not convinced? No problem! Let’s go over a spread from this book using the explanations included within.

How about the 4-Card How to Make Money Spread?

This easy 4-Card How to Make Money Spread will give you an idea of where you can make changes in the way you spend money so you’ll have more. It’ll also show you where extra sources of money are, money that could be yours. Anyone interested in making a little extra cash won’t want to pass this spread by!

First I’m going to think about how I can make money. While I’m thinking about this I’m shuffling my cards, trying to touch each one in the process. When I’m satisfied that they’ve been shuffled and my cosmic energy has been put into them I’ll lay four down just like in this picture:

    How to Make Money Spread

The four cards that I drew look like this:

My ‘How to Make Money’ Reading

Well, I was quite surprised when I flipped over my first card and saw The Fool! That’s not really what I want to see in the How to Make Money Spread. Still, is there anything I can learn from it?

1st Card: This card shows your attitude towards money. If this card is positive you’re probably making wise choices for tomorrow. If negative, you might want to find ways you can change your situation so that your attitude eventually becomes more positive.

Interpretation: I think what The Fool is trying to tell me is that I’m currently being rather foolish with my money, perhaps even allowing it to walk right off a cliff. It seems that I’m rather dreamy about finances, and my thoughts are in the clouds about it. But that doesn’t give me the surest footing when I’m on the ground. My current situation isn’t helping me make money, but thankfully the real world, as seen by the small dog, is trying to get my attention and pull me back.

2nd Card: This second card is showing you something that you don’t need to be spending money on. It could be an expense, something you splurge on, or ways in which you’re simply throwing your money away. Try to eliminate this from your life.

Interpretation: The Hermit in this position is telling me that I’m spending money on myself or that I’m spending money so that others can learn from me. Both are correct in my case, but in regard to an expense I think The Hermit is telling me to stop wasting so much money on things that I may be doing by myself. I can think of a few there that could be eliminated, such as cigarette smoking, which I usually do by myself. The Tarot is open to interpretation, and the more you apply the cards to you, the better your reading will be.

3rd Card: Finally, the card we’ve been waiting for! This third card shows you how you can make more money. Study this card carefully so opportunities don’t pass you by.

Interpretation: What a favorable card! The Eight of Wands is telling me that I have the power to make money; I don’t need to rely on anyone else. I know this because there are no people on this card, something that’s quite rare in the Tarot deck. Wands are also the card of creativity, so this is telling me that I can make money through creative endeavors. Hey, you’re reading this book, so I’m pretty close! Those wands are blossoming, after all. I know that there’s also an unlimited amount of potential for me to make money through my creativity, as seen from the blue sky.

4th Card: Now that you know how to make more money, this card will show you where. Perhaps there’s an opportunity for more work, to sell something, or maybe a chance to invest. You should get a clear idea of where in your life this money will come from by looking at this card.

Interpretation: I’ve drawn the Two of Wands for my final card in the How to Make Money Spread. This card really reinforces my earlier interpretation of the 3rd card. We see a wealthy merchant holding the world, or his power, in the palm of his hand. He’s got two wands by his side, and is even holding one of them. This tells me that courage and daring will aid me in my creative endeavors. What’s more, I’ve got more creativity and courage to spare, as seen by the extra wand.

Overall I’m happy with this reading. It started out a bit surprising, but ended quite well. It was a real reading I actually did for myself while writing this Introduction. None of the cards were reversed, or upside down. That will be discussed with each card, but it generally means the meaning of that card is opposite of the description you’ll read.

You can also tell that I’ve used a lot of my own interpretation when doing the reading. I consider what those cards might be pointing to in my own life and I interpret them that way. After all, these cards look the same to anyone, anywhere. It’s the personal meanings that we give them that really make them powerful.

That’s just one spread and four cards from this book. You’ll get a whole lot more inside, and have a lot of fun learning Tarot in the process. Intermediate users will get a lot of practice, and you won’t have to waste a lot of time flipping through different books to find all the answers you need. And experienced Tarot readers will get a fresh perspective on the cards, as well as a helpful guide and resource when conducting readings.

I use my Tarot cards on a daily basis to answer simple questions that are bothering me, get an idea of where I should go with my writing, and just for fun. Remember, pulling out your Tarot cards should always be a thrill. Hey, you’re about to jump into the unknown!

I know this book will help you understand the cards and conduct detailed readings in ten minutes or less. Welcome to Ten Minute Tarot!

    How to Read this Book

I’d start out straight away with a reading and then come back and read this section later. Pull your cards out and shuffle them up. Choose one spread from the spreads section that sounds interesting. Lay your cards out one at a time, going to the book to check what each one means. Return to your previous spread to see what the next card is and continue on.

After you’ve done a few spreads and seen a bit of what the cards can mean, take a break. Look at all of your cards yourself for a bit, studying them on your own. Let your own thoughts and perceptions form as to their meanings.

When you’ve done that come back and read through the cards in the book in the order they appear. Many of the suits especially will have a new and interesting outtake for you based on the cards that come before and after them. When you read about each card outside of a reading you’ll have a whole new perspective on what they can mean for you.

Do a few more readings now that you have a better feel for the cards. They’re getting easier, aren’t they? Perhaps it’s time to go back and read through all of the individual spreads now, checking to see what each means and how it can tell you about your past, present, and future. No doubt you’ll be a little intimidated by some of them, but also excited at what they can tell you.

From there you’re all set. You can do any Tarot reading in the book in ten minutes or less. Of course you’re not going to be an expert on Tarot, but you’ll have a good start. Try to read through this book several more times to get a feel for the cards. It’ll take quite a few readings to get comfortable with them all, but you’ll get there!

There are plenty of great books out there that will help you with your Tarot cards. If you’re interested in what each of the cards means in more detail than you find here, check out Learning the Tarot by Joan Bunning. For a great book on spreads, check out Power Tarot by Trish Macgregor for 100 different combinations. Major Arcana

The Major Arcana are like all of the important face cards of a regular card game, and they’re the most important. They’re very like the ‘picture cards’ we have in the packs today – Queens, Kings, Jacks and Aces. We’d all rather be dealt them in a poker hand – unless, of course, they’re in a special order like a flush or group like four of a kind!

So why are they different? Because they really dictate how the other cards are read. They’re the ‘star’ of the reading, if you like.

The idea behind the Major Arcana is simple. There are 22 cards in the Tarot deck that have special meaning and importance. Sometimes these are called trumps or triumphs, and they really tell you how the cards are read. When a reading is conducted, a Querent, or the person asking the question of the cards, will select a certain amount of cards. Many of these cards will have special meanings for their life.

Lots of people believe that the Tarot cards had special meanings that were simple to understand for the people the cards were made for. The Italian nobility had a certain way of looking at things in the 15th century, and those made their way into the cards. It wasn’t until the 19h and 20th centuries that the occult influence came into the Tarot cards, and they started to be used for divination purposes. That’s why so many people use Tarot cards today, to see what’s going to happen down the road.

Lots of suggestions were put forth by the occultists for what the cards true meanings were. Divination methods, stages of life, and paths to spiritual ascension were all possible meanings.

It’s clear that the meaning behind the Tarot is constantly changing and evolving to suit the times it finds itself in. Each age has certain traits and archetypes that they apply to the cards, and that’s one of the reasons why Tarot remains so compelling to this day.
