Chapter 1 There is a Problem
Many workmen
Built a huge ball of masonry
Upon a mountain-top.
Then they went to the valley below,
And turned to behold their work.
It is grand,
they said;
They loved the thing.
Of a sudden, it moved:
It came upon them swiftly;
It crushed them all to blood.
But some had opportunity to squeal.
-- By STEPHEN CRANE
A meeting was taking place in the oval office between the president, Kelly Anderson, her chief of staff, the vice president, the secretary of state, the secretary of defense and several high level advisors from the pentagon.
The topic being discussed had to do with reliable intelligence, gathered by NSA, and relating to Iran’s planned nuclear attack on United States. There could be no mistake. The attack was imminent and would take place in three days. As the meeting progressed many options were explored and rejected for one reason or another. A ground invasion could not avert the attack. It was not known if a nuclear attack on their country could or would stop it. They were not sure of the exact launch site. The US had the capability to destroy Iran completely, but the collateral damage to surrounding countries would be cataclysmic. However, it was becoming clear that if any part of Iran was left intact the attack could still come.
Brandt Southern was a liaison officer between the NSA and CIA and the main intelligence person in attendance. He was a fairly young man, in his early 40s and very high tech oriented. His hair was shoulder length and he wore denim trousers and jacket. He was asked to give his opinion of the situation. As soon as he began most all present were impressed by his PhD level of speech and composure. His first remarks were startling as he said what the Iranians have in mind for us is not a conventional nuclear attack. They plan to hit us with EMP.
Lisa Beaufort, secretary of state held up her hand to stop him there saying I have heard of EMP but need a little refresher on just what it is. Perhaps Madam President will need some briefing also.
I have made an in depth study of the effects of EMP but I think Troy would be even better qualified to update you on that,
Brandt replied. He was referring to Troy Boswell, the secretary of defense
