Properly Judging Prophetic Ministry - Ted J. Hanson

    Summary

    Preface:

You will find that many of the topics addressed in this book are subjects that I have written about in past newsletters. All of the topics addressed, however, will have additional information added to them and will provide a deeper look into many of the subjects that I have previously addressed. There are many new chapters added as well, which will broaden your understanding of the prophetic and prophetic ministry. It is my goal to provide extensive, yet easy to understand, instruction to all who are stirred in their hearts toward prophetic ministry. There are many other publications done through House of Bread as well that provide teachings of various kinds. For more information, you can contact us by phone or mail.

It is my goal to serve the prophetic saints of God with information that will help equip them for the work of ministry. I hope that you find this book both instructional and life changing. I pray that the Holy Spirit opens the eyes of your understanding that you will know the hope of His calling and the riches of His inheritance within you as a saint. May God release the destiny that He has prepared for your life and may He use you to release His prophetic power of life within your measure of rule upon the earth. Let it all be for the glory of our Lord and Christ, Jesus, who reigns on high!

    Introduction:

In recent years, God has disclosed His prophetic nature to the church in an awesome way. We have seen a new rise in the restoration of the office of the prophet, as well as prophetic ministry through God’s anointed saints in this hour. In this book I am going to address the need to properly judge the ministry of the prophetic. We must not shy away from God’s true prophetic ministry because of the many abuses that have come at the hands of men regarding prophetic ministry. God wants to bring us to a place of righteousness concerning the truth of His prophetic nature and power.

Each of us are responsible to God for our own individual walk with Him. It is important that we do not remain ignorant concerning the things of God. When we were not in a covenant relationship with Him, we were bound in total ignorance. Now that we have made Him Lord of our lives, it is important that we learn to clearly recognize Him for who He really is. We have been called by God to be active, functioning members of His awesome body upon the earth. We are continually being called to the hope of His calling (Eph. 1:18) and it is important that we receive Him each time He makes Himself known to us. We must be diligent to present ourselves approved of God as workers who do not need to be ashamed, but rightly divide the word of Truth (2 Tim. 2:15).

In order to understand if something is of God or not, we must first learn to excel in recognizing Him. If we know what He is like, then we will know that it is not Him when something not like Him comes along. In order to properly judge prophetic ministry we must understand what God’s prophetic nature looks like. When another nature comes along, we will know that it is not of Him. If we study light it will not be hard to recognize darkness. If we study darkness we may never know the light.

In this book we will do an in-depth examination of the prophetic nature of God. Whether we are ministering as prophets, prophetic saints, or even the recipients of such, it is important that we can clearly recognize God’s heart in proper prophetic ministry. We need not fear the false if we know how to walk in faith for what is true prophetic ministry from God.

    Chapter 1

A Prophetic God Produces a Prophetic People!

When God created man, He created him in His own likeness and image. Because of sin, we were separated from the truth of that likeness and image. We no longer have a true perspective that recognizes God and that which is of Him. When we became born-again believers in Christ, we received access to God’s wonderful plan of restoration in our lives. The Spirit of God within us is releasing God’s renewing process of change in our lives. We are once again being transformed into the image and likeness of God. God is faithful to send His power and instruction both within our hearts and to our souls in this process of restoration in our lives. Because we have become so removed from God’s likeness and image, we often reject some of the things that He brings about for the restoration of His image in our lives. This is simply because we do not recognize His true image when we see it. Our natural man has a problem when it comes to receiving the things of God’s restoration in our lives. Our eyes have not seen, our ears have not heard, nor have our minds thought of the things that God has prepared for us (1 Cor. 2:9). It is important that we remain hungry in our hearts for the complete restoration of God’s own nature and likeness in us.

Part of the nature of God is that of prophetic expression and power. What He says, what He does, what He expresses, what He demonstrates, all affect the unfolding of future events, conditions, and circumstances. Jesus was the prophetic expression of God made known to us in the flesh. He was the express image of God and by His very nature He was the creative expression of life to the earth:

Col. 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.

When God communicates with us in any way it is prophetic in power. This is true simply because of who God is. God is the one who declares the end from the beginning (Isa. 46:10). He is the one who speaks and the future unfolds. His inspiration is one which causes life to break forth wherever He desires. God meets all of the criteria for the ultimate authority in prophetic communication. Some simple definitions of prophecy could be:

The act of telling what will happen; the foretelling of future events.

Something told about the future; an indication of something to come.

A divinely inspired expression, utterance, revelation, visual manifestation, or writing.

Since God is Himself the Author and Creator of all the future holds, we can simply define prophecy as God communicating (with man). When God communicates with us, it cannot help but carry the substance of His prophetic nature. His expression may be vocal, visual, musical, written, demonstrated, or in any form He chooses to express Himself. God’s purpose for His prophetic expression is to bring forth a future full of His increasing life. He must communicate with the essence and the substance of life or there will be no life. We must allow God’s own prophetic nature to be released and heard upon the earth or there will be no future for that which is, or that which is intended to be. It is God’s plan to use us in this wonderful and awesome process of increasing life upon the earth. When God speaks, life happens!

The Bible teaches us that we were created in the likeness and the image of God. What is born of God is also born of His nature. We are being changed daily into His likeness and image by the wonderworking power of His Holy Spirit. Part of that change is enabling us to be a people who manifest the prophetic nature of God. A prophetic God requires a responding prophetic people. His prophetic word of power will bring about change both within us and through us. Just as the course of a river brings the substance of life to the soil of the earth, the word of the Lord is powerful within the mouths of men. It is intended to bring forth life to the very ground upon which we stand. The voice of the Lord is the voice of many waters and that voice is both working in us and through us to bring about His life in every way.

1 Pet. 1:23 …having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever…

The power of the word of God is intended to restore us. Through sin, we were subjected to the bondage of that which is corruptible. Through God’s word we have been transformed into the reality of His incorruptible power in order to restore His image which was lost in our lives. The original plan of God is still the plan which He holds within His heart.

Gen. 1:26 Then God said, Let Us make man in Our Image, according to Our Likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

God is faithful to speak His word into our lives in order that we might become partakers of His divine nature. He is a God of communication. His communication is full of the ‘DNA’ of hope. It’s full of the ‘DNA’ of a future. God’s words are full of the ‘DNA’ of life. It is important that the word of the Lord is released to the earth in an increasing measure. It is the word of the Lord and His communication of life that will ultimately break the power of corruption. The promises of God are nothing more than His own words to men. God’s words are always full of the creative power of life. God’s words are prophetic in that they always produce that which will propagate life.

2 Pet. 1:4 …by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

The source of the prophetic power of life is always found in God. The source is found in Him, but it is expressed through His Body. Jesus Himself testified that the power of God’s creative life would freely flow from within those who believe in Him.

Jn. 7:37 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38 He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. 39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

The Holy Spirit is God’s own Spirit of communication to men. He is the One who reveals all truth. He is the One who causes rivers of life to flow from our inner beings. He is the One who releases the power of God’s own prophetic nature within the hearts of regenerated believers in Christ.

In the first chapter of the book of Revelation we find that the basic truth of the ‘Revelation of Jesus Christ’ is that He is found standing in the midst of His Church. It is from that position that His voice is heard. His voice is the voice of many waters. His voice is the voice of
