    Definition of ADD and ADHD

ADD stands for Attention Deficit Disorder, where ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.  Although the abbreviations and names are different, these conditions are the same.

ADD is an older term, and has been officially dropped from medical literature.   There was a brief period of time where ADD and ADHD were considered two different disorders, but that has since been adjusted into just one, with ADHD being the official name.

ADHD is the most commonly diagnosed behavioral disorder in the United States for children under 18, with 4.5 million kids diagnosed.

ADHD is typically diagnosed in children, and approximately 9.5% of American children between the ages of 4 and 17 are impacted.  Adults can be diagnosed with ADHD but in most cases, the adult has had the disorder since childhood.

Typically, another close adult notices the symptoms which prompts and evaluation and diagnosis.   For a diagnosis of ADHD to be made, symptoms that cause impairment must be present before age seven and symptoms must occur in more than one setting, meaning work and home, or home and school, etc.

Lastly, symptoms must interfere with the person’s ability to function in a variety of settings, such as work, home, and/or school.

ADHD has three subtypes, those being Predominately Inattentive Presentation, Predominately Hyperactive-Impulsive Presentation, and Combined Presentation.
