About this ebook

“No Exit” by Jean-Paul Sartre was first launched in 1944. It is titled “Huis Clos” in French. It is an existentialist play.

The play was first performed in May 1944 at the Theatre du Vieux Colombier. The play has been performed under several titles translated into English: In Camera, No Way Out, Vicious Circle, Behind Closed Doors, and Dead End.

The play revolves around the description of the afterlife. Three deceased characters are punished in their afterlife. Those characters are being locked into a room, in Hell, together till eternity.

“No Exit” can be said to be the predecessor of the theatre of the absurd. However, the play presents very appropriate narrative construction. It also follows a conventional dramatic progression.

The dramatic progression and narrative construction was just opposite to the work of Beckett or Ionesco.

It was Sartre’s perception that No Exit establishes the philosophy of existentialism. That philosophy had originated in the 19th century, but existentialism is generally associated with Sartre and his works.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

Joseph Garcin, Ines Serrano, and Estelle Rigault are the three damned souls. As the first scene begins, these three damned souls are brought to the same room in Hell. They are locked inside by a mysterious servant, valet.

The three of them had been expecting torture devices to punish them for eternity, but now they find themselves in a plain room which is furnished in the style of the Second French Empire.

None of them really knows what the reason for their damnation is. None of them admits the reason. Joseph says that he was a pacifist and that is why he was executed.

Estelle insists that in his case a mistake has been made. Ines is the last to speak
