About this ebook

Clan: Season 2, Episode 3. Calum’s New World

A Bitesize 1 hour Read.

Our hero, Calum Maclean, has almost made it to the New World. All he has to do is stop the French hanging the ship’s crew. And stop the man-o’-war blowing them out of the water.

And if he does manage to achieve the impossible, the assassin, Jacob Metzger, is waiting for him in New York.

Calum has sworn to free the Scottish deportees. And one in particular. The lovely Magdalene. Of all the enemies and assassins, Magdalene is the most terrifying.

His arrival in New York can only go with a bang. If he and John Mackintosh live long enough to get there, and that is highly unlikely...

    Calum’s New World

Calum worked his way up between the huge French warship and his own little cargo ship, using his feet and back, and stopped just below an open gun port and peered carefully inside. The gun crew were gone, probably up on deck now they knew the guns would not be required.

He looked down and smiled as Big John struggled to replicate his back-and-foot technique to climb, but John was much bigger, heavier, and decidedly less agile. By the time he’d dragged himself up next to Calum, sweat was pouring down his face and he was breathing like an old horse.

He glared at Calum and tried to say something, but needed his breath to stay conscious, so stuck to glaring.

Calum ignored the unspoken promise and pulled himself up onto the port and took another careful look around, then waved John up. He put his hand under his arm and pulled. To help. The move unbalanced John and he almost fell headfirst into the ocean before grabbing the port sill and pulling himself into the ship, to lie like a beached whale on the deck next to the cannon.

Next time, he gasped, try not to help me so much.

Calum drew his dirk. C’mon, we’ve a ship to capture.

John swore quietly and climbed to his feet, using the cannon as support. Aye, just the two of us. The Frenchies’ll be scared to death.

He followed Calum across the gun deck and up the wide ladder to the upper deck. The door at the top was open and they looked out at the hundreds of sailors and French soldiers lining the rail facing the captured English ship.

Do we rush them? John said without a hint of irony.

Calum stood aside. Aye, you go first.

John stood up. Calum grabbed his belt and pulled him down, staring at him incredulously.

What? John said with a big frown. You said to rush them.

And if I said jump over the side?

John smiled. I’d look to see there was nothing in the water first.

You worry me, John Mackintosh, y’know that?

    Aye, I do.

Calum edged back from the door. Let’s see what’s happening before we do anything… rash.

John was still smiling as he followed his friend back down the ladder to the gun deck. We could blow up a few of these wee barrels of powder, he said, tapping his foot against a powder keg next to the nearest cannon.

Aye, but it’d probably blow our ship up too. He
