    Animus - Ava Soren

In the dead of night, the blistering cold winds of winter howl hauntingly. The streets are empty; completely devoid of life. The darkness practically consumes the sleepy town. Thus, making it the perfect hiding place for those seeking a refuge from their past. Auburn, in upstate New York, just outside of Syracuse, was just that place for someone looking to ensconce themselves in relative anonymity. It was perfect for hiding from someone, from a life, from a past and hide in a future.

But no matter how far a person runs or how well they hide, eventually they are greeted by that fear. As the saying goes, "Three things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon and the truth."

Down the crooked street not far from town stood a beautiful property bought recently from a wealthy man seeking that very seclusion.

Thomas Raines’ was suddenly awoken, his fingers unclasped themselves from his glass letting it slip. It fell to the floor with a crash, spilling Scotch all over the mahogany floor.

‘Shit’ he muttered drowsily, slowly tilting his drunken body to the side after being roused by the sound of glass shattering, ‘What the hell was that?’

Raines had been sleeping face down on his sofa, his arm dangling over the edge, hands barely holding onto his favorite sleep inducing spirit. That’s what he spent most of his lonely nights doing since moving into that big empty house a few months earlier; numbing his conscience in alcohol hoping to drown it. He recklessly attempted to booze himself into an amnesiac stupor night
