Book lovers, rejoice!

Introduction

Amazon’s Kindle Fire is a very affordable tablet computer. It runs on the Android operating system and, because of that, there is a wide variety of apps that expand its potential enormously. Kindle Fire offers enormous utility for a low price.

But what really makes the Kindle shine is the Amazon App Store, which allows you to effortlessly find and download a breathtaking array of games, entertainment, utilities, and tools. Even though there are more than 700 apps described in this book, the bar was set very high. Only those apps that deliver outstanding functionality – and whose developers have demonstrated a serious commitment to their customers – have made it into this reference guide.

I have two major pieces of advice when it comes to app shopping. First, remember that most paid apps usually have a free lite version which enables you to judge whether it’s worth spending a few dollars more to get the full-fledged version. I have two young children in my family who love playing with my Kindle Fire. Nearly every time they’ve asked to download a paid app, I’ve been able to find a free version of it that kept them entertained just fine.

The vast majority of apps in Amazon’s App Store are free, and so the bulk of this book is devoted to those freebie gems. A short section at the end of each chapter mentions some outstanding paid apps that merit your attention.

Also, remember that Amazon has a Free App of the Day promotion. Each day of the year, one paid app is available for free download until midnight of that day. If you remember to do it every day, this one feature of Amazon’s store could save you $1,000 or more during the course of each year!

OverDrive Media Console: Library eBooks & Audiobooks

Did you know you can borrow Kindle books from public libraries? Yes, OverDrive allows you to download Kindle books and audiobooks from your public and school libraries, right onto your Kindle. Over 27,000 participating libraries lend bestsellers and classic titles via OverDrive. Use the Get Books feature in the app to find a nearby library.

Kindle editions are borrowed just like print books. You browse your library’s digital collection, check out with your library card number, and download. Overdrive’s built-in eBook reader and audiobook player allows you to use the title until the lending time expires, so you don’t have to worry about late fees.

Libraries usually have a certain number of Kindle and other eBooks, which can be lent to one library patron at a time. If the book you want is checked out, you can join a waiting list.

Goodreads

Goodreads, owned by Amazon, is the world's largest social network for readers with about 10 million users. The app provides easy access to content from the online community, Goodreads.com, which enables members to freely search Goodreads' extensive user-populated database of books, annotations, and reviews. Read thousands of book reviews and comment on them, keep a virtual bookshelf of what you've read, and build your to-read list as you discover new books on the app. Features include:

Wattpad - Unlimited Stories

Wattpad is a free library of books and stories. Pick from over 10 million free titles: the best of sci-fi, fantasy, mystery, romance, fan fiction, thrillers, and much more. Many of the writers are amateurs but you can also find famous authors.

Wattpad began in 2006 as an online community (Wattpad.com) themed around writing and storytelling. Users are able to post articles, stories, and poems about anything either online or through the Wattpad app. The content includes work by undiscovered and published writers. Users are able to comment and like stories or join groups associated with the website.

The most frequently voted stories appear on the What's Hot List. These stats change daily, due to reads and votes by other users. Wattpad also has a Featured Story list, which promotes content reviewed and approved by staff and an editorial review board. Many of these featured stories are written by self-published and professional writers from different genres.

Learn PHP Programming

This app is a tutorial about PHP programming, which stands for Hypertext Preprocessor and is a server-side language. This means that the script is run on your web server, not on the user's browser, so you do not need to worry about compatibility issues. PHP is relatively new (compared to languages such as Perl (CGI) and Java) but is quickly becoming one of the most popular scripting languages on the internet. This book includes some good examples and exercises for those interested in PHP.
